There is no standard formula for calculating reasonable compensation. It is not a fixed percentage or a simple calculation.

The IRS looks at facts and circumstances to decide what is reasonable versus unreasonable.

Some key factors include:

- The financial condition of the business
- The duties you perform
- The number of hours you work
- The company’s compensation policy for all employees
- What similar roles in your industry are paid
- Your qualifications, including degrees, certifications, and experience

Each situation should be evaluated individually.

Your reasonable salary may also change over time. As your business grows and your responsibilities shift, your compensation should reflect that.

Stay organized, compliant, and confident with our year-round bookkeeping and tax support.

March marks the end of Q1, and successful business owners treat it like a financial checkpoint.

Here is what they focus on:

- Make sure all accounts and credit cards are reconciled
- Review Q1 revenue, expenses, profit, and cash flow
- Run an accounts receivable aging report and follow up on unpaid invoices
- Check gross profit margins and adjust pricing if needed
- Review top expense categories and cut what is not serving the business
- Plan ahead for upcoming tax and compliance deadlines
- Set financial goals for Q2

March is about getting clear on what is working and fixing what is not.

They always say how you start the year sets the tone.

Have you done your March financial check in yet?

Bank statements alone do not substantiate your deductions. They show that a transaction happened, but they do not explain the business purpose behind it.

Here is what proper documentation actually looks like:

- Mileage logs with the date, destination, business purpose, and miles driven

- Asset purchase records showing the invoice, in service date, and business use percentage

- Payroll reports, filed tax forms, and proof that payments were made

- Meal receipts that show the date, total, and clear business purpose

- Home office records that prove exclusive use and accurate square footage

Clean books are step one. Solid documentation is step two.

Before you dive into the next few months, take a minute to set actual financial targets. Not just “make more money” but real numbers.

Start here:

1. Revenue goal: How much do you actually want to bring in this quarter? Break it down by month so it feels doable.

2. Profit goal: What do you want to keep after expenses? Revenue is great, but profit is the goal.

3. Expense check: Are there any costs you need to reduce or cap in Q2?

4. Cash flow target: What is the minimum balance you want in your account at all times?

5. Owner pay: How much are you committing to paying yourself this quarter?

Use your Q1 numbers as your baseline and build from there.
