How much do you really need to retire?
$1 million? $1.5 million? $2 million?
A nationwide analysis from Investopedia shows why there may not be one “magic number.” For couples retiring at 62, estimated savings needs ranged from roughly $1.3 million to $1.8 million depending on the state...and that's only one contributing variable.
Retirement age, healthcare before Medicare, Social Security timing, where you live, and whether spouses retire together can all change the math.
And sometimes, the timeline changes unexpectedly: 46% of retirees surveyed said they retired earlier than anticipated. Only 11% of couples retired at the same time. The takeaway? Retirement planning isn’t just about reaching a certain account balance. It’s understanding how your income, expenses, taxes, benefits, healthcare and timeline work together to support the retirement you actually want.
