Employers with more than five (5) employees may be required to auto-enroll the employees into a 401(K) retirement plan. A provision in the $3.5 trillion spending bill will require employers to enroll their employees and withhold initially 6% of their pay - going to 10% over time or the employer will face penalties. The companies that fail to provide the 401(k) and auto-enroll the employees will face fines of $10 per employee, per day for up to three months. (This is what is currently proposed in the bill. Please remember the bill has not passed yet and may change if it eventually does) But, we are starting to see some of the language of the direction the Democrats are wanting this bill to go.

On this Labor Day, there are some things that I just don't understand. Usually, I have a pretty good idea, but this one has been stumping me and despite all my research and studying I just can't seem to figure it out. Why are so many businesses having such a hard time finding employees?

Nationwide the unemployment rate is 5.2% and locally much lower. Historically except for the Trump years when it was under 4%; 5.2% would be considered a really good rate and in the last decade one of the lower - again except for the Trump years.

There are over 10 million job openings and about 7 million people on unemployment - so more job openings than unemployed.

Reports state somewhere between 1/3rd and 50% of small businesses report they have unfilled jobs for months.

Wages have been increasing. So what gives? Again, I don't have the answers on this one, but I do have some steps employers should be taking right now to proactively solve their employee issues and increase their productivity and profits.
