Big change to 1099s for 2026: the federal reporting threshold for Form 1099-NEC and most of Form 1099-MISC is going up — from $600 to $2,000 per payee. It's the first update to this rule since 1954.

What it means: if you paid a contractor or vendor less than $2,000 total in 2026, you generally don't need to file a 1099 for them. The $2,000 counts total payments to one person across the whole year, not per invoice — and income is still taxable even when no 1099 is required.

Our advice: review your vendor list now, keep collecting W-9s anyway, and track payments by payee so you're ready in January.
