💼 S-Corp Owners: Owner’s Draw vs. Salary — What’s the Difference?

We get this question a lot, so let’s break it down simply 👇

🔹 Owner’s Distributions (Owner’s Draw)
If you’re an S-Corp owner, distributions are generally not subject to payroll taxes — because S-Corps are pass-through entities. The business pays tax on its net profit, and that income flows through to you personally.

🔹 Owner’s Salary
When you pay yourself a salary, it’s treated like employee wages:
✔️ The S-Corp deducts it as a business expense
✔️ You pay income tax + payroll taxes on those wages

⚠️ Important note:
The IRS requires S-Corp owners who work in the business to take a reasonable salary before taking distributions. Getting this balance wrong can trigger penalties or audits.
