Can I do my own bookkeeping?
Many business owners ask me, “Can I just do my own bookkeeping?”
The answer is yes.
The better question is: Should you?
Bookkeeping isn’t just entering transactions into QuickBooks. It’s making sure every transaction is categorized correctly, bank and credit card accounts are reconciled, payroll and loan activity are recorded properly, and your financial reports actually reflect what’s happening in your business.
If something is categorized incorrectly, your Profit & Loss can tell the wrong story. That can lead to poor business decisions, missed deductions, cash flow surprises, or extra cleanup work later.
If bookkeeping keeps getting pushed to the bottom of your to do list, or you find yourself second guessing your numbers, it may be costing you more than you realize.
Pro tip: At a minimum, reconcile every bank and credit card account monthly. If your accounts aren’t reconciled, you can’t be confident your financial reports are accurate.
If you’d like a second opinion on your bookkeeping, my calendar link is in the comments to schedule a free books evaluation. I’d be happy to help you determine whether your books are giving you the clarity you need.
Have you ever tried doing your own bookkeeping, or do you prefer to leave it to a professional?
