The warns of an evolving digital assets scam where fraudsters are sending fake IRS letters that direct you to enroll your cryptocurrency in a “Digital Asset Compliance Portal” by a certain deadline. No such portal exists.

If you receive this notice, do not scan the QR code or provide any personal or financial information. Scammers are trying to steal your information and digital assets.

One important reminder: an extension gives you more time to file your return, not more time to pay any taxes owed. Interest and applicable penalties may continue to accrue on unpaid balances.

It will apply to eligible original returns starting with tax year 2025 and 2026 quarterly returns. If you're eligible, the IRS will apply AEP and send you a notice.
