Happy Tax Day! I can happily say that all clients that got me their information have been filed on time! I still have a few on extension that wanted some more time to get things together, so we filed their automatic 6 month extensions. Their returns are now due October 15th. If you haven't filed, it's not to late to reach out for tax help! I can get an extension filed for you as well - as long as you contact me by 9:00 tonight and get me the information I reach back out to you for.

We're a week away from tax day! If you still need to file your taxes and haven't found someone to do your taxes, feel free to reach out to me and see if I can fit you in. Even if we can't get it done by tax day, I can always file an extension for you to protect you from the Failure to File Penalty. There's still time, but there's not much time.

I see from the email I get from the post office that the last of my tax documents are coming today! How about you? It feels good to beat the rush and not have it hanging over your head into April. The more information I have, the better return I can do for you. If you are a returning client, you only have to enter the information that changed (new phone number, new address, new children, bank information, etc.), but any check boxes may open up the door for more savings on your taxes - the more information you give, the better for you. These pictures can be printed and filled out ahead of time, or email me at [email protected] and I can send a PDF copy of the form.

My morning email from the Post Office tells me I have the first 2 of my tax documents coming today. 'Tis the season. You probably don't have all your information yet, but when you do, I'll be ready to get you in for an appointment or have your paperwork dropped off.

Getting a letter from a tax authority can be scary. I received this one in November and had less than a month to respond. It was only $400. Most people would probably pay it. But, through no fault of my own, I have received several letters from the IRS and NYS over the past 15 years questioning my personal returns. And none of those letters have been correct. My tax returns have been, and they have agreed with me every time. From owing a couple hundred to getting an extra $2000 back, they have always been wrong. Not every letter is wrong, but if you get a letter, I recommend teaching out to a tax professional before doing anything else. I've heard that this year NYS sent out letters to NY residents with PA income. From what I have heard, these letters were all a mistake. Check out your letters before paying or spending based on a letter from a taxing authority. They have been known to make mistakes.

With the "No tax on overtime" rule this year, I have just learned that your w-2 form will not be updated to include amounts paid for overtime. To claim the deduction for overtime wages (up to $12,500 of the 'half' of your time and a half), you will need to bring a copy of your last payroll statement (paystub with overtime on a separate line, or breakdown from your employer) to be able to claim the deduction this year.

Lots of people in government are talking about the "huge" tax refunds people will be getting this year. The people who will see the biggest benefit include people with children (especially children under 4 in NY), people with tip income, people with overtime pay, and seniors 65 yrs old and older. If none of these apply to you, you may see a slight bump in your refund, but if you can check several of those boxes, you may see a large increase this season.
