Paper Check Refunds Will Be Delayed This Year

Approximately 830,000 CP53E notices have been sent to taxpayers because the IRS does not have valid direct deposit information on file. Under the new process, the IRS temporarily holds the refund and mails a CP53E notice asking the taxpayer to provide or update banking information through their IRS online account. Taxpayers generally have 30 days to respond and enter the correct account and routing numbers to receive their refund by direct deposit. If no action is taken within that timeframe, the IRS will issue a paper check, often after several weeks of additional processing. This could mean up to 12 weeks.
