One of the things I’m already appreciating about the FBI National Academy is that learning doesn’t stop when the classroom closes.

This weekend started with attending a tour of George Washington’s home, followed by a visit to Mount Vernon. Walking through George Washington’s home, seeing the estate, and spending time reflecting at his tomb was a powerful reminder that leadership is rooted in character, service, and sacrifice.

Later, I made my way to Nationals Park to watch the Nationals take on the Yankees. Like many in the first responder profession, one of my favorite traditions is trading patches and challenge coins. It’s more than collecting memorabilia—it’s a way to honor service and connect with others.

Some of the best conversations I’ve had so far have happened outside the classroom. Talking with classmates about leadership, what’s working in our organizations, the challenges we face, and the lessons we’ve learned has been just as valuable as any lecture.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to be here and excited for what the next 10 weeks will bring.

"I'm making more money than I ever have... so why does it still feel like I'm living paycheck to paycheck?"

I've heard some version of that question from officers, firefighters, EMS professionals, and dispatchers more times than I can count.

The answer usually isn't that you're lazy or that you need another overtime shift.

It's often a combination of habits that slowly crept in over time:
• Bigger payments after every raise.
• Overtime becoming part of the monthly budget.
• No clear plan for each paycheck.
• "Emergencies" that were actually predictable expenses.

The good news? None of those are permanent.

While traveling across the country to begin a leadership training this week, I made a stop at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania.

Walking these grounds is a humbling experience. Along with many other first responders and service members who have come before me, I left a patch and a challenge coin as a small tribute to honor the passengers and crew whose courage changed history on September 11, 2001.

Seeing the patches, coins, and other mementos left by those who continue to serve is a powerful reminder that the legacy of service and sacrifice lives on. Leadership isn’t just about rank or title—it’s about character, humility, and remembering those who gave everything so others could live.

As first responders, we have the privilege and responsibility to serve our communities every day. Moments like this remind us why that calling matters.

MY HABITS & “I DESERVE IT” KEEP ME BROKE.

Funny? Maybe.

True for a lot of us? Absolutely.

One of the biggest money traps isn’t low pay—it’s using “I deserve it” to justify another purchase. After a long shift, mandatory OT, holidays worked, or stressful calls, it’s easy to reward yourself.

The problem is when that reward becomes a habit.

We’re halfway through the year. Summer spending is here. Christmas is only six months away.

If your financial stress looks the same as it did in January, don’t beat yourself up—but don’t ignore it either.

Your paycheck matters.

Your habits matter more.
