What a great day in Springfield, IL.

I had the opportunity to teach a full day of Justice In Your Wallet, our state-certified financial wellness course, in partnership with LETAC MTU 10. The room was filled with officers who genuinely wanted to be there, asked thoughtful questions, and were committed to improving their financial futures.

One of the most interesting moments came from a live poll during class. When asked which debt feels the most emotionally exhausting, 50% of attendees selected mortgage or rent payments, followed by credit cards and student loans. It was a great reminder that financial stress isn’t always about the biggest balance—it’s often about the payment that follows you every month.

A special thank you to Chatham IL Police Department for supporting this training opportunity. Their Chief specifically requested this course and encouraged a strong group of officers to attend. That’s leadership that invests in people, not just positions.

And because it wouldn’t be law enforcement training without it, I found one of the funniest bathroom signs I’ve seen in a while. The humor, sarcasm, and personality that exist throughout this profession are part of what makes these events so enjoyable.

Appreciate MTU 10 and everyone who spent the day learning, laughing, sharing experiences, and taking steps toward stronger financial wellness.

Quick financial wellness check.

If your paycheck was delayed by two weeks, what would happen?

Would you be okay?

Would it create stress?

Or would it put you in a tough spot?

This isn't a test and there's no judgment. It's simply a reminder that financial wellness isn't about how much you make—it's about the margin you've created between your income and your expenses.

Many first responders work hard every day to take care of others. Taking a few minutes to evaluate your own financial readiness is part of taking care of yourself and your family.

What's your answer: Okay, Stressed, or In Trouble?

When training coordinators start reaching out asking for financial wellness training, it tells you something.

Departments across Central Illinois are recognizing that money stress doesn't stay at home—it follows officers to work, impacts wellness, affects relationships, and can take a toll on performance both on and off duty.

That's why I'm headed to Central Illinois this week to teach Justice In Your Wallet.

This workshop was built by a cop, for cops. No sales pitches. No investment products. No gimmicks. Just practical financial strategies designed to help officers reduce financial stress, create more margin, and build a stronger future.

Looking forward to spending the day with the officers and first responders who are investing in themselves and their families.

Recently at a State Wide Law Enforcement Conference I asked:

"How does your agency currently address financial wellness for employees?"

The results were telling.

• 38% said there is little to no discussion about money and officers are left to figure it out on their own.

• 50% said support is limited to an EAP, an occasional retirement presentation, or a flyer from HR.

• Only 13% reported having an ongoing financial wellness program with education, support, and leadership buy-in.

Financial stress is one of the most common stressors first responders face, yet it remains one of the least talked about.

If we care about officer wellness, retention, performance, and family health, financial wellness needs a seat at the table.

Financial stress impacts more than bank accounts.
It affects sleep, anxiety levels, decision-making, relationships, and ultimately officer safety.

Grateful for the opportunity to present during the ILETSB Executive Institute May 7 statewide webinar alongside leaders from the Chicago Police Department to discuss the real connection between financial wellness and mental wellness in law enforcement.

These are conversations our profession needs more of.

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated.

Today is a reminder that freedom came at a cost.

The backyard cookouts, cold beers, hot dogs, family time, and the ability to gather freely with the people we love — none of it exists without the sacrifice of those who never made it home.

This Memorial Day, take a moment to remember the fallen heroes who gave everything for this country. Their sacrifice is the reason we get to enjoy these moments together.

Honor them well. 🇺🇸

A lot of people in this profession are making more money than they ever thought they would… and still feel financially trapped.

That’s not always an income issue. Most of the time it’s habits, lack of margin, stress spending, or never having a real plan in place.

The good news? Habits can change. And when habits change, stress starts changing too.

Birthday today. Grateful for another year and the people in this picture.

The older I get, the more I realize most of us aren’t really chasing stuff — we’re chasing peace. Less financial pressure. More time with family. More breathing room outside the job.

That’s what today’s blog is about.

National Police Week hits different when you’ve spent almost 20 years in this profession.

This week is about remembrance, reflection, and honor. We remember the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. We honor the families who continue carrying that loss every day. And we reflect on the privilege and responsibility that comes with serving our communities.

This career will test you in ways most people will never fully understand. But it also builds lifelong bonds, purpose, resilience, and perspective.

I’m grateful for every officer, dispatcher, firefighter, medic, and first responder still answering the call today. Stay safe and never forget those we’ve lost.

I love this career
