Nobody enjoys seeing red in a portfolio.

But if an investment in a taxable account is worth less than you paid, the loss may have tax value.

Selling can turn an unrealized loss into a realized one that may help offset capital gains elsewhere.

That does not automatically make it a good trade.

You still have to decide whether you want to own the investment, what you would buy instead, and whether the wash-sale rule could get in the way.

Before the year ends, look at the portfolio and the tax return together.

There are a lot of numbers involved in what I do.

But this is how I measure whether we're doing our job well. 🤍

Does she understand her financial life better than she did before?

Does she know what we're working toward?

Does she understand why we're making a recommendation?

Does she feel comfortable asking questions?

And does she know there's someone helping her think through the decisions ahead?

That's the experience I want every woman who works with us to have.

I'm grateful every time someone trusts us with something she's spent decades building, and it makes my heart happy when I receive messages like this one from a client:

If your employer offers a 401(k) match, check what you need to contribute to receive the full amount available to you.

Then look one step further.

• What percentage are you contributing now?
• Where is the money invested?
• Who is listed as your beneficiary?

These are small settings, but they can sit untouched for years.
