An enrolled agent is a person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by either passing a three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns, or through experience as a former IRS employee. Individuals who obtain this elite status must adhere to ethical standards and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses eve

ry three years. Enrolled agents, like attorneys and certified public accountants (CPAs), have unlimited practice rights. This means they are unrestricted as to which taxpayers they can represent, what types of tax matters they can handle, and which IRS offices they can represent clients before. Some tax returns need extra review for accuracy, completeness, and to protect taxpayers from fraud and identity theft. Returns that fall into this category can take longer to process.

THIS IS FROM THE IRS STAKEHOLDERS LIASON.

Dear Stakeholders,

If you could please share the following with your membership I would really appreciate it.

With preparations for the next tax season starting there is something important you should be aware of:

The IRS will be sending out two letters to taxpayers in January:

Letter 6419 - Advance Child Tax Credit Payments
Letter 6475 - Economic Impact (stimulus) Payment

It is important that your clients retain these letters. Entering incorrect advance child tax credit or economic impact payment amounts will cause delays in tax return processing and the issuance of refunds.

Having your clients retain these letters and provide them to you is the most efficient way for you to obtain the economic impact payment and advance child tax credit payment dollar amounts you will need to prepare their tax returns. The alternative ways of either you or your clients getting this information electronically is likely to be a much more involved process.

I hope this information will be of some use during the upcoming filing season.

Sincerely,

Narina Bchtikian
