Medicare enrollment is not a one-time decision, and a few of its rules carry long term financial consequences.

Taking your required minimum distribution on time matters, but knowing the right way to take it matters just as much.

A few RMD rules are easy to miss. Not every account carries an RMD — Roth accounts are exempt, and in some cases, so is your current employer's 401(k). Traditional IRAs must each be calculated separately, but the total can be withdrawn from any combination of IRAs. Qualified charitable distributions sent directly to a nonprofit can satisfy your RMD without adding to your taxable income.

RMD planning is ultimately about keeping the money you have already saved and directing it where you want it to go. Taken without a plan, a required withdrawal can quietly lift both your tax bill and your Medicare premiums.
