IRS provides additional day to file and pay for taxpayers through Wednesday, April 18; IRS processing systems back online

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced today that it is providing taxpayers an additional day to file and pay their taxes following system issues that surfaced early on the April 17 tax deadline. Individuals and businesses with a filing or payment due date of April 17 will now have until midnight on Wednesday, April 18. Taxpayers do not need to do anything to receive this extra time.

The IRS encountered system issues Tuesday morning. Throughout the system outage, taxpayers were still able to file their tax returns electronically through their software providers and Free File. Taxpayers using paper to file and pay their taxes at the deadline were not affected by the system issue.

“This is the busiest tax day of the year, and the IRS apologizes for the inconvenience this system issue caused for taxpayers,” said Acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter. “The IRS appreciates everyone’s patience during this period. The extra time will help taxpayers affected by this situation.”

The IRS advised taxpayers to continue to file their taxes as normal Tuesday evening – whether electronically or on paper. Automatic six-month extensions are available to taxpayers who need additional time to file can visit https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/extension-of-time-to-file-your-tax-return.

YUP! This is what happens when you ignore filing your required tax returns for more than several years.

New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Commissioner Thomas H. Mattox today announced the arrest of a Cortland County car dealership owner for sales tax fraud that amounted to more than $180,000.

Joseph Fezza, 45, the owner and sole proprietor of JF Auto World, also known as Auto World, located at 991 Tompkins Street, Town of Cortlandville, NY, faces five felony charges. They stem from his collection and retention of sales taxes on vehicles he sold over a period of more than five years, and his failure to file sales tax and personal income tax returns.

The charges are: one count of Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, a class C felony; two counts of Criminal Tax Fraud in the Third Degree, a class D felony; and two counts of Repeated Failure to File Personal Income Tax Returns, a class E felony.

Fezza was arraigned on these charges by Cortland City Court Judge Thomas A. Meldrim and entered a plea of not guilty to all charges. He was released upon posting bail. If convicted, the defendant faces a maximum sentence of five to fifteen years in prison.

A joint investigation conducted by the Tax Department and the Attorney General's Office found that Fezza collected but failed to remit to New York State more than $180,000 in sales taxes from March, 2004, through September, 2009. He also failed to file sales tax returns since July 2004, and failed to file personal income tax returns since 1998.

Commissioner Mattox thanked Assistant Attorney General Joshua Vinciguerra, Stephen J. Maher, Deputy Bureau Chief of the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau, and Gail Heatherly, Bureau Chief of the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau, all from the New York State Attorney General's Office, for their cooperation in the case.

The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty.

QUICKBOOK 2009 Payroll Users:

Those who are using QuickBooks 2009 for their payroll will have until June 30, 2012 to either upgrade to a newer version of QuickBooks or some other method. Support for this version is being discontinued. After June 30th payroll taxes will not calculate correctly and payroll tax forms will not be available.

I have a Web Based Payroll service through Intuit Payroll for Accountants. Your payroll withholding will always be correct, tax forms done on time and accurately. Plus you can download to whatever version of QuickBooks you are using. A bonus is access to the new web based time sheet and time clock system that ties directly into your payroll.
