Letter 6475, Your Third Economic Impact Payment, was sent to recipients of the third stimulus check starting in late January. It's considered the official record of your payments for all of 2021. Stimulus checks received throughout 2021 are not taxable. However, need to be reported on your 2021 return to ensure you received the full credit entitled to you.

Most Americans received their full EIP but if you had a new baby or added a qualified child to your family in 2021, you're eligible for an additional $1,400 for each new child.

Additionally, the third stimulus payment was based on 2020 taxes: If you earned less money in 2021, you'll need Letter 6475 to claim any additional money.

The IRS won't mail another stimulus check, but those entitled to more money can claim what's called the recovery rebate credit on their 2021 tax returns when they file in 2022, according to the agency.

IRS to Handle Unemployment Returns, Don't Amend

Returns filed with unemployment benefits prior to the $10,200 exclusion should not be amended. The IRS has indicated it will refigure taxes on these returns and adjust the taxpayer's account accordingly. The IRS will then send any refund amount directly to the taxpayer.

The IRS has not yet communicated a timeline for making adjustments and sending refunds. If you file state returns in states that do conform to the federal unemployment exclusion, you may still need to file amended state returns for your affected clients. At the moment, OH has not made a decision on conforming to the federal unemployment exclusion. Until a decision is made by the State, there is no current need to file an amended State Return.
