Confession Time: Last Friday, I submitted my 110th Buzz Around Wayne County article. It’s hard to believe, but Article 109 was the first time my column received public criticism. Arguing in the comment section is pointless, but I do think clarifying the article’s point can be helpful to others.

People typically come to financial advisors in crisis. They have already been berated by their spouse, parents, closest friends, or internet bullies. Clients need to feel safe talking with me. By sharing about my own struggles with spending discipline in the article, I hoped it would bring some comfort for those who need help.

Yes, the critics’ concerns about affordability and taxes are valid, but we can’t solve these issues alone. I try to focus on things we can do, such as practicing the basic fundamentals of financial management.

Companies like Rocket Money, Chime, and Dave “bank” on the fact that most of us don’t practice basic fundamentals. Rocket Money’s current advertising campaign basically says we cannot remember our subscriptions, so they’ll just do it for us. Yes, there are situations where these services are needed. My job is to help you avoid those situations.

Luke 16:10 says, “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.”

Regardless of the size of our bank accounts, we can always work on improving our financial management skills. Practicing good habits now can help you later.

ICYMI in my email newsletter, there is some good news on the working while disabled front. It is a step, so please help me keep this issue from getting lost behind other political special interests. Awareness is the key.

As Tom Cruise said in Jerry Maguire, “Help me, help you!” Remember when I shared the paper below? There is some good news on that front! A bill was created by the NC General Assembly in March 2025 that should solve my issues. Please help me convince our representatives to pass SENATE BILL 448. U...

My new blog post is about the Carolina Hurricanes and what their Stanley Cup championship can teach us about Financial Planning. Perfect reading material while watching National Hockey League (NHL) draft!

After 20 long years the Carolina Hurricanes are once again the Stanley Cup Champions! What can they teach us about Financial Planning?

There was a great story on CNBC yesterday about using AI to negotiate home prices. It's important to remember the first sentence of the story: A home, as with all assets, is only worth what a willing buyer will pay.

CNBC's Diana Olick reports on AI's growing influence on housing transactions for buyers and sellers.

On Memorial Day we honored those who died securing the freedom we enjoy as Americans. I believe we continue to honor them daily by chasing our dreams. My dream Is to help you pursue your own dreams.

Unfortunately, as my practice grows, I’m facing roadblocks because of my disability. Please understand this is not another request for more handouts, but an idea that could serve as a blueprint for people with disabilities pursuing financial independence.

I wrote Allowing Capitalism to Create Opportunities as a proposal to help entrepreneurs with disabilities succeed without jeopardizing eligibility for government assistance.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, people with disabilities are often one of the highest demographics for unemployment. I believe this comes from our fear of losing government assistance because earning limits are too low. Increasing earning limits is a start, but not a true solution.

The solution is simple: Entrepreneurs should be allowed to have an account for business operations without those funds counting in resource eligibility testing. Then entrepreneurs can pay staff, taxes, and other business expenses. Currently, this is impossible because we are limited to $2,000 in resources. Last year I had to put my office’s new roof on my credit card. Of course, that is terrible financial advice, but I had no choice.

Building a business should not cause an entrepreneur with a disability to lose health insurance. Nor should their ambition create more burden on their family because their home health aide is taken away.

The entire proposal can be found below. By sharing this post you’re helping us fix this problem.

Unfortunately, the argument lasted so long that the drinks evaporated! Can you imagine your life being controlled by such nons...
