PSA: There is an IRS deduction for landowners who purchased or inherited agricultural land. Most people do not take advantage of this deduction. It is the Section 180 deduction which allows up to $1800 per acre deduction for excess soil nutrients. There are companies that come to the farm and test the soil, provide a report of the existing nutrients in the soil from previous owners and allows you as a new landowner to take a depreciation over a number of years of the existing soil nutrients in your soil.

If you have purchased, plan to purchase or inherit land in 2026, let me know, I will gladly provide contact information for the local companies that will do the lab testing and reporting.

The qualified energy efficiency credits are a little different for 2025 and a bit of change for 2026. In the past new roofs, appliances etc were considered energy efficient. Beginning in 2025 they are no longer eligible. The items eligible are HVAC, hot water heaters, doors, windows, solar or other types of energy sources.

Also new is the need for a QMID (Qualified Manufacturer Identification). This in 2025 is a four letter/digit combination on the label and the paperwork proving the manufacturer and the item are qualified items for the credit.

In 2026 and going forward, that code is 17 digits and letters long like a VIN on an auto.

For tax preparation that number is required to be eligible for the credit. It can be found from the paperwork from the dealer/seller, receipt and label on the item.

Any item without the QMID is NOT eligible for the credit.

The IRS is in the process of phasing out paper checks for tax refunds.

At the beginning of this filing season, we were advised to begin transitioning clients from paper refund checks to direct deposit through a bank account whenever possible. While the IRS indicated they would still issue paper checks in certain situations, those refunds may take significantly longer to process.

Recently, a few clients have informed us they received a notice from the IRS requesting their bank information for direct deposit in order to complete the refund process.

If you receive this notice, you can log in to your IRS Online Account and enter your bank information so the IRS can process your refund more quickly. If you do not currently have a bank account, the IRS account portal will provide information regarding possible exceptions or alternative options.

Please note that you will need to have an IRS Online Account established in order to complete these steps.

Going forward, for all future tax returns we will request your bank routing and account information prior to filing so refunds can be issued by direct deposit whenever possible.

Update on Government Shutdown and IRS Operations

As many of you may be aware, the federal government entered a partial shutdown as of Saturday. I had not been closely following the situation due to a very busy few weeks in the office and only became aware of it this evening.

I have been reviewing recent IRS email newsletters and their website to understand any potential impact on tax return processing, refunds, or IRS operations. As of this morning’s newsletters, there has been no mention of any changes or disruptions related to the shutdown.

Historically, the IRS does not immediately reduce staff in anticipation of a short-term shutdown. However, if a shutdown extends beyond a week, staffing reductions may occur. This could potentially result in longer processing times, delays in refunds, and increased difficulty reaching the IRS by phone, which are already ongoing challenges.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will share any updates or relevant information as it becomes available.

There have been a few calls this morning asking about how to prove the overtime pay they received for the credit this year.

Employers can include your OT amount in Box 14 of your W2 or they can provide a report or you can bring your final paystub with your pay broke out for the year.

This is new for 2025 and we are ALL learning how to properly document the overtime. SOOOOO bring everything you have that will prove your overtime.

We will begin making appointments on January 21st for taking tax returns. IRS does not accept electronic filing until January 26th.

Our hours will be the same. Monday-Friday 9-5, Wednesdays until 7 pm and Saturdays 9 – noon. We prefer you schedule appointments. Our telephone number is 660-834-3300.

You can securely download your documents to your client portal and when we have them completed, we will upload the returns and supporting documents to that portal. If you have not accepted prior invitations, please let us know and we will resend the invite. It will come from doublebbookkeeping.cchifirm.us. The website is https:// doublebbookkeeping.cchifirm.us. Currently 2022-2024 are in the portal. The client portal allows you to access your returns at any time for purposes such as banking, home purchases, financial aid applications, and more – eliminating the need to contact our office for additional copies. This does not replace the physical copy of your return and folder we provide after preparation. Instead, it offer added conveniences and returns the time we spend pulling files, copying, scanning and emailing additional copies.

Follow up on our FB page Double B Bookkeeping & Tax Service LLC for posts regarding new tax laws or changes, IRS news, office closings, weather related road conditions etc. I posted this summer about the One Big Beautiful Bill details such as “No Tax on Tips”, “No Tax on Social Security”, “No Tax on Overtime and “new car interest deduction”. I will share more details on how to let us know about your tips or overtime.

I will be posting this week some other details.

Don’t forget to bring us information on new babies born in 2025. Bring you 1095A if you had ACA (Obamacare).

If you have been part of Identity Theft, you will need to provide us the PIN sent by IRS before we can submit your return.

If you have not set up an IRS account on the IRS’s website, I recommend you do so. This can be done for personal/individual but a business account can also be set up for businesses such as withholding, partnerships, S or C Corporations.
