Five things decide whether a reporting package can actually carry a decision.
1. Segmentation. Can you see results by the groups that matter — stage, vintage, entity, submarket — and not just by property or project?
2. Measurement. Do the measures that actually run the business exist in the report at all?
3. Comparison. Are actuals held against budget and original underwriting every month, not just at the end?
4. Connection. Does the reporting tie financial results back to operating or development drivers?
5. Delivery. Does it arrive early enough to change a decision, without being rebuilt by hand first?
Most reporting packages are not weak in all five. They are capped by one. And the one that caps it is usually the one nobody has named out loud.
