More Hurricane Surfing

Because in Florida, even calm water has a little chop.

As we roll into a new calendar year, we want to help both existing and prospective clients set realistic expectations for the insurance market—especially here in coastal Florida. The good news? There actually is some relief out there. The less-good-but-still-manageable news? Relief in Florida insurance often comes with fine print, footnotes, and a moving target.

🌴 The Good News: More Carriers Are Back

After several tough years, Florida has seen an increase in the number of property insurance carriers and programs, particularly for coastal homes. A big reason for this is regulatory reform aimed at stabilizing the market, led in part by oversight from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation.

These changes have encouraged new insurers to dip their toes back into the water. Translation: more options than we had a couple of years ago, and in some cases, better pricing than you might expect.

Sounds great, right? Well… grab your surfboard.

🏄‍♂️ The Catch: Small Boards, Shallow Water

Many of these newer programs are smaller carriers with limited capacity. They don’t have the massive balance sheets of the legacy insurers, which means they are constantly fine-tuning their exposure.

That can look like:

Pulling out of entire ZIP codes

Non-renewing whole counties

Suddenly deciding your neighborhood has become “catastrophic-adjacent”

So yes, you finally got a break. And then—surprise—you receive a non-renewal notice in year one. No claims. No damage. No drama. Just a politely vague letter referencing “catastrophic exposure management.”

Welcome to hurricane surfing.

📬 The Non-Renewal Panic (and Why You Shouldn’t)

When that notice shows up, the natural reaction is panic. Totally understandable. But here’s the reality:

In most cases, coverage is available

Prior inspections usually still work

Roof reports, wind mits, and 4-points often transfer just fine

The twist? Each carrier has its own underwriting quirks, so be prepared for some… creative questions.

Examples we hear all the time:

“When was the hot water heater replaced?”

“What breed is your dog?”

“Has anyone ever sneezed near the electrical panel?”

None of this means you’re uninsurable. It just means you’re changing surfboards mid-wave.

⏰ The Timing Trap

One of the most frustrating parts: timing.

Non-renewals often come 90–120 days before expiration, but many carriers won’t even release quotes until 30–45 days out. That awkward waiting period feels like standing in the water, watching waves roll in, while holding a board you’re not sure you’re allowed to use yet.

This is normal. Annoying—but normal.

🚗 Quick Sidebar: Auto Insurance Headlines

You may have also seen recent headlines about auto insurance rate decreases in Florida. That is good news—and real. Increased competition and regulatory pressure have helped slow (and in some cases reverse) rate increases.

But, just like property insurance, it’s a mixed bag.

As rates stabilize:

Underwriting tightens

Minor accidents or traffic violations get more scrutiny

Some drivers may see non-renewals instead of surcharges

Same theme, different line of coverage.

🌊 The Bottom Line

Florida insurance is still a Catch-22:

More options, but more movement

Better pricing, but stricter rules

Relief today, adjustments tomorrow

The key isn’t avoiding the waves—it’s learning how to ride them.

And that’s where we come in.

We’re here to help you manage expectations, navigate non-renewals, translate underwriting oddities, and yes—surf through another hurricane season, paperwork and all.

No wipeouts required. 🏄‍♀️

Goodbye 2025… Hello 2026! A Small Business Owner’s New Year Reset 🎉

If you’re a small business owner, chances are 2025 felt a little like trying to juggle flaming torches while riding a unicycle… during a hurricane… on a deadline.

You survived it anyway.
So first things first—congratulations.

Now that the calendar has flipped, it’s time to say a polite (or not-so-polite) goodbye to 2025 and start 2026 with a clean slate, a fresh cup of coffee, and hopefully fewer surprises.

Let’s Be Honest About 2025 😅

2025 had character.
Rising costs, carrier non-renewals, staffing headaches, inspections, audits, forms that needed one more form—you know the drill.

If your business:

Added “insurance paperwork” to your job description

Learned new acronyms you never wanted to know

Or spent quality time on hold listening to elevator music

…you weren’t alone.

New Year, New Opportunities (Same Business, Better Prep)

The New Year is a perfect time to reset—not reinvent your business.

Think of it less like “New Year, New Me” and more like
“Same Me, Fewer Problems.”

Here are a few smart (and painless) things small business owners should consider as we roll into 2026:

✔️ Review Your Coverage (Before It Reviews You)

If your business changed in 2025—new employees, new services, new locations, new equipment—your insurance should reflect that.

Spoiler alert: insurance policies don’t automatically update themselves.
(We’ve checked.)

✔️ Clean Up Payroll & Classifications

Misclassified employees and under-reported payroll are some of the biggest sources of headaches (and audits). A quick review now can save you big stress later.

✔️ Expect More Scrutiny

Carriers are paying closer attention than ever. Inspections, documentation requests, and underwriting questions aren’t personal—they’re just part of the current insurance climate.

Preparation beats panic every time.

A Friendly Reminder from Your Insurance Team 🦸‍♂️

Insurance isn’t just about buying a policy—it’s about protecting everything you’ve worked so hard to build.

At SIA Insurance, we specialize in helping small business owners:

Navigate workers’ comp and liability coverage

Find solutions when the standard market says “no thanks”

Understand their options without the insurance mumbo-jumbo

And yes—we promise to keep things as painless (and human) as possible.

Cheers to a Stronger 2026 🥂

As we say farewell to 2025, take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come. Running a small business isn’t easy—but you’re still standing, still growing, and still moving forward.

If you’d like to start the New Year with a quick insurance check-up, a second opinion, or just a conversation—we’re here.

Here’s to fewer surprises, better coverage, and a successful 2026.

We’ll be back on Monday, fully recharged, slightly heavier, and ready to help with all your insurance needs — from homes and autos to businesses and “my-uncle-tried-to-fry-a-turkey-and-now-I-need-to-file-a-claim” situations. 😉

Honoring Our Veterans – A Family Tradition of Service and Gratitude

At SIA Insurance, giving back to our community is more than a company value—it’s part of who we are. My wife, Tracy, and I are proud to volunteer and financially support several veterans’ organizations. Our company also contributes financially and offers employee incentives to encourage participation in charitable causes that make a difference.

One of the most meaningful events we’re involved in is the Ponce Inlet Veterans Memorial Association’s Service, honoring those who have served our country. Although I’ve never served in the military—and I’m certainly no theologian—I’m deeply grateful to take part in these ceremonies. Somewhere along the way, I was designated the “prayer guy” for the events, probably because the board prefers prayers that are brief and to the point… a skill I’ve perfected!

Tracy proudly served in the U.S. Navy, as did our son and my father-in-law. My own father served in the U.S. Army. Their service—and the service of so many others—fills me with pride and gratitude every day.

We are forever thankful for the selflessness and sacrifice of all who have worn the uniform of our nation, whether they saw combat or not. Their dedication and courage safeguard the freedoms we hold dear.

To all veterans and their families—thank you. Your service continues to inspire us to give back, to remember, and to honor.

🎃 Boo! It’s That Time Again! 👻

The costumes are ready, the candy stash is strategically hidden from the adults, and the kids are plotting their sugar-powered neighborhood takeover.

At SIA Insurance, we love Halloween — but even superheroes, witches, and zombies need a few safety tips before heading out for the night:

🕸️ 1. Be Seen, Not Scared.
Add some glow sticks or reflective tape. The only thing scarier than the dark is your electric bill if you don’t turn off those porch lights later.

🍬 2. Inspect the Loot.
No one wants a “mystery candy” situation. Remember, if it looks suspicious or like it came from 1987… toss it.

🧙‍♀️ 3. Watch Your Step.
Between masks, capes, and sidewalks that have seen better days, trip hazards are real. Even superheroes need balance training.

🐶 4. Pet Costumes Optional.
Your dog may not share your enthusiasm for the hot-dog outfit. Keep your furry friends safe and far from the chocolate!

🚗 5. Drive Like It’s a Haunted House Zone.
Kids pop out faster than horror movie jump scares. Go slow and stay alert.

Have a safe, spooky, and super fun Halloween from your friends at SIA Insurance — Super Savings, Super Coverage, and Super Service! 🦸‍♂️🎃

🌪️ Florida Homeowners Insurance: Riding the Storm of Change

If you own a home in Florida, you already know that homeowners' insurance here can feel like a roller coaster ride during hurricane season. Between rising costs, disappearing carriers, and sudden non-renewal notices, it’s no wonder many Floridians feel like they’re constantly scrambling to stay insured.

At SIA Insurance Agency, we understand the frustration. You finally find a policy, breathe a sigh of relief, and then—just a year later—you get a letter saying your policy won’t be renewed. It’s “scramble time” all over again. Unfortunately, this has become a common story across the Sunshine State.

Why Is Florida’s Insurance Market So Volatile?

The main culprit: hurricanes and storm-related losses. Each season brings billions in claims, and insurance companies often reassess their exposure. Some carriers withdraw from high-risk areas entirely, while others stop renewing policies in certain zip codes or for older homes. Even well-maintained homes can be affected simply because of where they’re located.

What To Do If You’re Affected by a Non-Renewal

If you’ve received a non-renewal notice—don’t panic. Take these steps to protect your home and stay covered:

Contact the Insurance Company

Reach out directly to understand the reason for the non-renewal. Sometimes it’s due to underwriting changes, inspection results, or overall exposure limits in your area.

Document Everything

Keep copies of all correspondence—letters, emails, and any inspection reports. Take clear photos of your home, roof, and any repairs or improvements. These records can make it easier to obtain new coverage and show insurers that your home is well-maintained.

Shop for New Coverage Quickly

The Florida insurance market moves fast. Don’t wait until your policy expires—start shopping around 90 days before the expiration date. SIA Insurance can help you compare options from multiple carriers to secure a new policy before your coverage lapses.

Prepare for Higher Premiums

Unfortunately, premiums across Florida are climbing due to rebuilding costs, reinsurance rates, and overall storm risk. Expect that your next policy might cost more—especially if your home is older or located near the coast.

Update Your Mortgage Company

Once you secure a new policy, notify your mortgage company right away. They’ll need the updated insurance details to properly manage your escrow account and ensure payments are applied correctly.

We’re Here to Help

At SIA Insurance Agency, we work with multiple Florida carriers and specialize in helping homeowners navigate this challenging market. Whether you need help understanding a non-renewal notice, comparing replacement options, or preparing your home to meet underwriting standards, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Don’t wait until the next storm is brewing—reach out today and let’s make sure you’re protected year-round.

The Joys of Running a Small Business (and Dodging Government Paperwork Curveballs)

Running a small business is one of life’s greatest adventures. You get to create something from scratch, serve customers in your own unique way, and maybe even build a legacy.

But then, somewhere between the excitement of landing new clients and the late nights balancing payroll, the other part of entrepreneurship shows up: government compliance.

And let me tell you, it’s a gift that keeps on giving.

Case in Point: The Letter About the Letter

Recently, from “a government entity that shall remain anonymous” (because the last thing I need is a parade of auditors knocking on my door), I received what might be the most government thing ever:

A letter.

Saying they can’t send me a letter.

Why? Because they apparently have the wrong address.

Yes, you read that right. They had the correct address to tell me they had the wrong address. Somewhere, a bureaucrat is high-fiving themselves for cracking the code on circular logic.

The Compliance Shuffle

Now, was this letter about corporate taxes? Payroll taxes? Another regulation hiding in the fine print? Honestly, your guess is as good as mine. Running a small business sometimes feels like being dropped into a game of “Regulatory Jeopardy” without ever seeing the questions ahead of time.

Category One: Taxes you’ve paid but they’re not sure you paid.

Category Two: Reports you filed but apparently didn’t.

Category Three: Things you didn’t even know you were supposed to do.

And the prize? Usually another form. Or three.

Laugh or Cry?

The truth is, small business owners wear a hundred hats. We chase down invoices, manage employees, build client relationships, and yes, try to decode government notices that even lawyers scratch their heads at.

The real choice is simple: laugh about it, or let it make you crazy. Personally, I choose to laugh—because otherwise I’d be curled up in the corner with a calculator and a bottle of aspirin.

The Upside

The upside is this: as frustrating as it can be, these challenges are also proof that we’re in the arena. Every confusing letter, every odd regulation, every hoop we jump through means we’re building something real.

So yes, the government may send us a letter saying they can’t send us a letter. But at the end of the day, the joy of being a small business owner outweighs the headaches.

And here’s the kicker: our office hasn’t moved in 12 years.

If they can’t find us by now, I’m not sure they ever will.
