Understanding the 4 Financial Roles in a Small Business
One thing I've noticed over the years is that many business owners use the term "CPA" to describe anyone who helps with their finances.
But in reality, there are several different financial roles, and each serves a different purpose.
Understanding these roles can help you know who to turn to when your business needs support.
1. Bookkeeper
A bookkeeper keeps your financial records organized and up to date.
They record income and expenses, reconcile bank accounts, and prepare financial reports such as Profit & Loss statements and Balance Sheets.
Good bookkeeping provides the foundation for everything else.
2. Tax Preparer
A tax preparer prepares and files your tax returns.
Their primary responsibility is helping you stay compliant with tax laws and filing requirements.
Tax preparation generally focuses on reporting what has already happened during the year.
3. Tax Planner / Tax Strategist
A tax planner helps you look ahead and identify opportunities to legally reduce taxes before year-end.
This may include evaluating entity structure, retirement contributions, timing of income and expenses, and other tax-saving strategies.
4. CFO or Financial Advisor
A CFO or financial advisor helps business owners make informed financial decisions.
They may assist with budgeting, cash flow management, profitability analysis, growth planning, hiring decisions, and long-term financial goals.
Think of it this way:
๐ The bookkeeper keeps the score.
๐ The tax preparer files the paperwork.
๐ก The tax planner looks for opportunities.
๐ The CFO helps guide the business forward.
In some cases, one professional may perform multiple roles. In other cases, it may take a team of specialists.
The important thing is understanding that these are different functions with different responsibilities.
The more clearly you understand the role of each financial professional, the easier it becomes to build the right support team for your business.
