The most expensive thing you can give your kids isn’t money.

It’s your time.

As parents, we spend years trying to create financial security for our families. We work hard, save, invest, and build for the future. These are all good things.

But there’s a trade-off we don’t often talk about.

Sometimes, in trying to give our kids more, we give them less of what they actually want most: Us.

Build family wealth and create opportunities, but please don’t miss the people you’re building it for.

Your family probably doesn’t need another financial account. It needs a financial plan.

Most parents we speak with have plenty of financial tools:

A 401(k) plan through work.
Maybe a former 401(k) from a previous job.
Roth IRAs.
529 plans for the kids.
Life insurance.
Cash sitting in different places.

Individually, each one may make sense.

But here's the problem: Nobody is connecting the pieces.

How much should go toward college versus retirement?

Should extra cash be invested, saved for a home project, or kept available for another opportunity?

Does your insurance coverage still make sense as the family has expanded?

Are you investing aggressively in one account while holding too much cash somewhere else?

And perhaps the biggest question:

What is this money actually supposed to help your family do?

Financial planning isn’t about amassing more accounts; it's giving each account a job. Collectively, those jobs may establish security today, options tomorrow, and enough flexibility to enjoy some of the life happening in between 😀

What part of your financial life feels the most disconnected?

Is it retirement? College? Cash flow? Insurance? Investing? Something else?

We’d love to hear in the comments what feels hardest to connect.

One of the most common misconceptions we hear about revocable living trusts is that they save taxes.

They don't, and here's why.

During your lifetime, a revocable trust is what the IRS calls a "grantor trust." The IRS treats those assets as yours because you retain the power to amend or revoke it, along with full control of the assets inside it. Therefore, the trust's income still hits your personal tax return while living.

A similar logic applies at death. That retained control causes the trust's assets to be included in your taxable estate, which means a revocable trust provides no measurable estate tax savings.

So what does a revocable trust actually accomplish?

It helps avoid probate on the assets it holds, keeps your affairs private, and provides seamless management of your finances if you ever become incapacitated. Those are quite valuable benefits for many families.

Tax savings isn't on the list. The trust strategies that can genuinely reduce taxes are usually irrevocable, meaning they require giving up control of the assets.

In other words, you typically have to choose between control and tax benefits.

**Estate and tax laws are complex. Consult a qualified estate planning attorney before implementing any strategy.**

70% of millionaires work with a financial advisor.

This isn't because they cannot manage money. Rather, it's because they understand something most people overlook:

Financial planning is more than chasing investment returns.

High‑achievers eventually realize their time is limited, so they outsource the complexity.

Real financial planning goes far beyond “What should I invest in?”
It includes:

* Tax Strategy
* Goal Planning
* Cash Flow Management
* Charitable Giving
* Education Funding
* Insurance Review
* Estate Planning
* Exit Planning
* Ongoing Financial Education

If your advisor isn't helping you in many of these areas, you may not be getting true, holistic financial planning.

Calling all faith-driven entrepreneurs and business leaders in Southwest Florida!

On Friday, September 18, WorthyNest founder and lead advisor Deb Meyer will be hosting a local watch party in Babcock Ranch for the Faith Driven Entrepreneur Conference.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. and features an incredible lineup of speakers, including John Maxwell and David Green (founder of Hobby Lobby).

It’s an opportunity to step away from the day-to-day, hear from inspiring leaders, and connect with others who are thinking intentionally about the intersection of faith, work, leadership, and purpose.

The event is a month away, but we’re gathering our local group now. So if this sounds like a morning you’d enjoy, get it on your calendar and plan to join Deb in Babcock Ranch!

And if someone comes to mind who would appreciate this event, please tag them or share this post with them.

We all love a good scroll!

Social media is fun, but it’s also FULL of subtle money traps that can quietly derail your family financial goals.

People don’t overspend because they’re irresponsible.

They overspend because their environment is engineered to trigger impulse buying.

At WorthyNest, we’re passionate about helping parents understand why these habits form. Small shifts in your habits can create big wins for your wallet 💳

Parents will spend 12 months planning a single day for their family.

A birthday party. A graduation celebration. A first trip to Disney.

They’ll compare venues, debate the guest list, research photographers, pick the food, and choose the music — all because they want the day to feel right for their kids.

They know there’s no “correct” way to celebrate. There’s only the way that fits their family.

But when it comes to some of the biggest financial decisions of their lives, many parents look for a generic answer online.

“Should we retire early or wait?”
“Should we convert to a Roth?”
“Should we open a 529 or something else?”

The truth is simple: None of these questions have a universal answer.

We’ve worked with families who earn nearly the same income yet make completely different choices. That's not because one is right and the other is wrong. It's because their goals, tax situation, kids’ needs, and priorities are different.

Financial planning isn’t about finding the answer.
It’s about finding the answer that fits your life (and your family’s future).

Ask the internet, and you’ll get thousands of opinions.
Ask someone who understands your situation, and you’ll get advice built around you.

P.S. Welcome to our newest family member, Belle (named after a Disney Princess). We adopted her a month ago from Gulf Coast Humane Society, and she's now part of the financial plan 😀

Ever notice how the best connections happen when you least expect them?

A huge thank‑you to the SWFL Rotary - Southwest Florida Rotary Club for hosting such a fantastic Business Networking Social at Pi Local in Babcock Ranch this morning! We had a great time meeting new faces and catching up with familiar ones.

Events like this remind us how strong and supportive truly is. We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect with fellow professionals who care about making a positive impact.

Looking forward to the next event and to continuing these meaningful conversations!

We've observed something interesting over years of retirement conversations.

Most parents know roughly how much they spend today, but very few of them have thought carefully about what they'll spend in retirement. And almost none of them have accounted for how that number will change over time.

Early retirement often looks like pre-retirement, minus the commute. People are active. They are traveling and spending money freely ... sometimes more than ever before.

Mid-retirement tends to slow down a bit. The big trips become a little less frequent, and the pace changes.

Later retirement often brings higher healthcare costs and less mobility.

A budget that works at age 65 may change significantly at age 75 or 85.

An experienced fiduciary financial advisor can help separate the non-negotiables from the nice-to-haves, build in the things that make life meaningful, and craft a plan designed to absorb an unexpected shock without derailing everything.

As you might imagine, this is much more than a one-time spreadsheet exercise. It's an intentional life planning conversation that may happen over several client meetings.

And we believe it's a conversation every pre-retiree parent should have.
