The OBBB: How to Factor Tax Law Changes Into Your Year-End Financial Statements

In July 2025, significant changes to the federal income tax rules were signed into law. While the OBBB primarily grabs attention from a tax compliance angle, they may also have significant financial reporting implications — even though some changes don’t go into effect until 2026 or later.

Businesses must address the effects of the changes under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) in their 2025 financial statements. For many companies, that will be a complex task. Here are the details.

Tax Cuts and Jobs Act: A comparison for businesses

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act ("TCJA") changed deductions, depreciation, expensing, tax credits and other tax items that affect businesses. This side-by-side comparison can help businesses understand the changes and plan accordingly.

Some provisions of the TCJA that affect individual taxpayers can also affect business taxes. Businesses and self-employed individuals should review tax reform changes for individuals and determine how these provisions work with their business situation.

Five Essential Cost Segregation Updates for Tax Year 2025

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) reintroduces 100% bonus depreciation for various property types starting January 20, 2025, enhancing the benefits of cost segregation and significantly increasing first-year tax savings for qualified properties. Sec. 179 expensing is still in play – with increased expensing limitations – and taxpayers should consider potential Sec. 179/bonus depreciation interplay.
The new Qualified Production Property (QPP) designation allows for 100% bonus depreciation on specific industrial facility portions used for production, but this is available only for a limited time, emphasizing the need for timely action to capitalize on this opportunity.
While the 179D Deduction and incentives for wind and solar projects have sunset dates, their phased withdrawal offers strategic planning opportunities, including increased Sec. 179 expensing limits, requiring taxpayers to make informed decisions to optimize tax benefits through cost segregation.

6 Tax Changes for Businesses Coming in 2026

The 20 percent QBI deduction, which was set to expire at the end of 2025, is now permanently part of the tax code for LLCs, S corporations, partnerships, sole proprietorships, and other pass-through entities. That will let eligible business owners deduct up to 20 percent of their company’s income. Starting in 2026, though, the deduction will begin to phase out for individuals who earn above certain income thresholds (approximately $278,000 for people whose filing status is single or head of household, $556,000 for people married filing jointly). Also next year, anyone with at least $1,000 of qualified business income will receive a minimum deduction of $400, even if their deduction would otherwise be fully phased out.
