Good catch — you’re right to tighten this up so it doesn’t accidentally sound like the Child Tax Credit or like IRS PUBLIC DISCLAIMER (because I have a PTIN and people take me seriously):
This is satire + math + policy commentary.
I hold a PTIN, which is why I’ve been asked to explain and “help promote” a proposed child savings account initiative often referred to online as the “Trump Child Account.”
This is NOT the Child Tax Credit and NOT current IRS law.

Apparently President Trump and JD Vance have looked at America, zoomed in on Redding, and said:

And because I’m a tax professional, I’ve been asked — again — to help explain the proposal.

👶 What it actually is (in plain English):
• A one-time $1,000 contribution
• Placed into a separate account in the CHILD’S name
• Not the parents’ money
• Not spendable by parents
• Intended to sit, grow, and be accessed later by the child under program rules
• Completely separate from the Child Tax Credit

So no — this does not help with diapers, rent, daycare, groceries, or sanity.

Now the math (because that’s my job):

📊 Cost to raise ONE child (0–18):
• U.S. average: ~$297,000
• California: ~$286,000

💰 💼 Who Manages the Accounts
• The U.S. Treasury Department will establish and administer the initial accounts and deposit the $1,000 seed money into them for eligible children born 2025–2028. 
• After that, the money is invested in mutual funds or ETFs that track a broad U.S. stock index (like the S&P 500). 
• These investments are handled by private financial institutions — meaning banks, brokerages, or investment firms will manage the actual investing piece for the accounts. 
• The guardian (usually a parent) is the custodian of the account until the child turns 18 — they don’t own it, the child does. 

🧠 How It Works in Plain Words
• The government sets up the account and puts in $1,000. 
• A private bank or investment firm actually invests the money in stock market index funds. 
• You (or family) can add more money up to $5,000 per year if you want.
