Second Batch Of California Stimulus Checks Sent Starting Oct. 24

To qualify, you must have filed your 2020 state tax return by October 15, 2021, and been a California resident for at least six months in 2020. You must not be listed as a dependent on someone else’s return for the 2020 tax year, and you must be a California resident on the date your payment is issued.

On October 24, California started mailing its second batch of stimulus payments to qualifying residents. The payments will come in the form of a debit card issued by Money Network. On September 29th, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill which will make PG&E wildfire victims' settlement payments state tax-free, but as of right now fire victims must still pay federal taxes on the award money.

Fire victims struggling to rebuild say they need every dollar coming their way from a PG&E settlement. Bipartisan legislation could make that money tax-free from the federal government -- but the bill is stuck in Congress.
