The IRS launched a new free app on September 25, and it does a lot more than the old one.
It's called the IRS app, and it replaces IRS2Go, which had been around since 2011. If you already had IRS2Go with automatic updates on, it should switch over on its own. If not, it's free in the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Here's what you can do from your phone now:
Check your refund status, including on amended returns, without calling. See if you owe anything, and make a payment. Read select IRS letters, even if the paper copy got lost in the mail pile. Pull your tax transcripts, which landlords, lenders, and student aid forms often ask for. Get your Identity Protection PIN, which helps keep someone else from filing a return in your name.
A lot of people avoid anything IRS-related because it feels official and hard to understand, so not knowing starts to feel easier than checking. The thing is, the not-knowing usually feels worse than whatever the account says. The app won't change what you owe or what you're owed, but it makes finding out a lot faster.
One safety note: download it only from the official App Store or Google Play listing. The IRS doesn't ask for personal or financial information through unsolicited texts, emails, or pop-ups, so ignore any message that does.
Have you ever put off checking something with the IRS because it felt intimidating? Tell us in the comments. 💚
