The Internal Tax Service (IRS) announced today that the country’s 2025 tax season will begin on Monday, January 27, 2025 and will feature expanded and improved tools to assist taxpayers as a result of the agency’s historic modernization efforts.
More than 140 million individual tax returns for the fiscal year 2024 are expected to be filed before the federal deadline of Tuesday, April 15. More than half of all tax returns are expected to be filed this year with the help of a tax professional, and the IRS urges people to hire a trusted tax professional to avoid potential scams and fraud.
The 2025 tax filing season will reflect the IRS’ continued progress to modernize and add new tools and functions to assist taxpayers. Since last tax season, improvements include increased access to tax account information via virtual text and voice assistants, expanded features on the IRS Individual Online Account, more access to dozens of tax forms via mobile phones and tablets, and expanded alerts of scams and fraud threatening taxpayers.
The IRS has also expanded the features and availability of last year's Direct File program.. This year, Direct File will be available starting Jan. 27 to taxpayers in 25 states.. Also, the IRS Free File Program Opens Today. Only available at the IRS. gov, the IRS Free File tax-guided software provides millions of taxpayers nationwide access to free software tools offered by trusted IRS Free File partners.
The IRS is also working to continue the successful 2023 and 2024 tax filing seasons, made possible by additional resources. The last two filing seasons saw service levels of approximately 85% and average wait times were less than 5 minutes on main phone lines, as well as significant increases in the number of taxpayers served at Tax Assistance Centers all over the country. Based on current plans and funding levels, the agency will work to deliver similar levels of performance on these key service metrics in the upcoming filing season.
