🛠️ After 20+ years in manufacturing accounting, there's not much that surprises me anymore.
Except maybe opening a Bill of Materials and wondering... who built this? 😂
I've worked through BOMs with multiple levels, old revisions, obsolete parts, assemblies inside assemblies, and costs that haven't made sense in years.
They're intimidating, but they're also one of my favorite puzzles to solve.
Here's what I've learned:
A bad BOM isn't just an engineering problem. It's an accounting problem. An inventory problem. A purchasing problem. A production problem. Eventually... it's a profitability problem.
I've seen companies chasing margin issues when the real culprit was buried several layers deep in the BOM.
The good news? It can be fixed.
With the right process and a little patience, even the most complex BOMs can be untangled. Once they are, costing improves, inventory becomes more reliable, purchasing runs smoother, and leadership has numbers they can actually trust.
There's something incredibly satisfying about taking a BOM that everyone is afraid to touch and turning it into something the business can rely on.
That's the kind of work I genuinely enjoy.
