If the idea of "selling" or "business development" feel uncomfortable, you're in good company.

Most people don't become financial planners because they want to be salespeople. They become planners because they want to help people make better financial decisions.

The good news is that the skills that make someone a great planner are often the same skills that make prospect conversations feel natural.

Listening well, communicating clearly, building trust, following through... Those aren't sales tactics! They're relationship-building skills.

Swipe through for three ways to make prospect conversations feel more confident and authentic.

When people talk about AI in financial planning, the conversation usually focuses on whether it will replace planners.

A more interesting question might be whether it changes how planners are hired and at what level.

Many of the tasks AI can help with today, like research, meeting preparation, note-taking, and follow-up, have traditionally been where new planners learned the foundations of the profession.

Those tasks weren't just administrative work. They were opportunities to build judgment, recognize patterns, understand client situations, and learn how planning actually happens.

AI can absolutely make firms more efficient, but as the profession evolves, it's worth asking how we continue creating opportunities for new planners to gain experience, develop confidence, and grow into advisor-level roles.

The future of financial planning needs both: better technology and strong pathways for the next generation of planners.

Getting busy is exciting.

It usually means your work is resonating, clients are referring people your way, and the career you've been building is starting to take shape.

It also means the administrative side of planning shows up fast.

Meeting prep, meeting notes, follow-ups, action items.... Without a system, those tasks can quickly take time away from the work that matters most.

A few things that help:

1️⃣ Build workflows before you need them. Create simple processes for meeting preparation, follow-up, and tracking action items.

2️⃣ Use AI thoughtfully. It can save time, but it captures what was said... not always what it meant. Also remember: it's not always right!

3️⃣ Protect the habits that earned clients' trust in the first place: curiosity, follow-through, and the ability to slow down when something important comes up.

As your client list grows, those qualities don't scale automatically. You have to build your practice around them intentionally.

One of the biggest challenges for new planners is finding opportunities to see what it really looks like to be in the room with clients.

That's why we built CORE.

Inside, you'll find nearly 60 courses built around real client meetings, real planning conversations, and real-world complexity. You'll also earn 50 CFP Board experience hours per course, join live coaching sessions, and learn alongside a community of planners who are working to build their skills and confidence.

Whether you're a student, career changer, or early-career planner, CORE was designed to help bridge the gap between learning financial planning and actually doing it.

AI is becoming a bigger part of financial planning, but "using AI" is only half the equation.

The other half is understanding where human expertise, judgment, and relationship-building still matter most.

A challenging lesson for new planners: How to balance empathy with boundaries.

Clients with fewer assets often have questions, concerns, and financial stressors that require significant attention. This makes clear communication (and yes, boundaries!) even more important.

The goal isn't to provide unlimited access or constantly overextend yourself. It's to create a client experience that is thoughtful, professional, and sustainable for both you and the people you serve.

That's a skill every planner develops over time, and it's one of the many things that textbooks rarely teach.

The profession needs more planners.

Recent research suggests firms could be short nearly 100,000 advisors by 2034. At the same time, demand for holistic financial advice continues to grow.

For people considering this profession, that's worth paying attention to.

This is meaningful work with strong demand, and it offers the opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives. That's quite the trifecta!

This week inside The Externship, we're talking about cash flow planning.

It may not be the first thing you think about when you consider building a financial plan (Externs tell us they are most excited about Investment Week 😉), but it's often the foundation everything else is built on.

Even the best recommendations have to fit within the reality of a client's money situation today.

Scroll through to see three reasons cash flow planning remains an essential part of the planning process.

One of the hardest parts of starting a career in financial planning is the education isn't the same as ex*****on.

You can understand the technical concepts and still feel unsure about leading a client meeting, navigating emotional conversations, or making judgment calls in complex situations.

That gap is more common than people think.

Real confidence is usually built through exposure, like seeing how experienced planners communicate, think through trade-offs, and guide clients in practice.

That’s why real-world experience matters so much early in a planner’s career. And it’s why programs like ours exist!
