Working as a financial advisor, patience has probably been one of the most important traits I’ve had to build.

Because not everything moves on a timeline.

Sometimes life gets in the way.
Sometimes things take longer than expected.
Sometimes decisions just need a bit more time.

And honestly, that’s completely fine.
It’s something you learn to understand as you spend more time with people.

At the end of the day, this isn’t about rushing a process.

It’s about making sure when things do move forward, they actually make sense for the person on the other side.
The person you see in the picture is doing the part of the job no one really talks about!

You can tell a lot about someone by how they think through a problem.

Some people jump straight to an answer.
Almost instantly.

Some start asking questions.
Trying to understand what’s actually going on.

And some just sit with it for a bit.
No rush to respond.
Just thinking.

& after years of working with people
15 years managing at Costco,
and now in this industry.

Something I’ve been noticing more and more.
The third type tends to come up with the most reliable answers.

And the reason is pretty simple!
They’re not trying to be right quickly.
They’re trying to get it right.

This is something that matters a lot…
especially if you’re just starting out as an advisor in this industry.

Most of the time, there’s this urge to respond instantly.

→ In a client meeting.
→ In a strategy conversation with colleagues.
→ Or even when someone casually asks for advice (even in those quick “what would you do?” moments)

But instead of rushing into an answer....
Take a second.
Look at it from a couple of different angles.
Question your first instinct.
Make sure you’re actually solving the right thing.

And then come back with something more thought through.

This won’t just improve your answer,
it changes how your words actually land.

𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬.

Not just financially, but in ways you don’t really notice.
It shows up slowly, in ways that are easy to overlook at first.

The trust.

It starts small.
A few conversations.
A few people willing to listen.

Over time, that trust grows into relationships that actually mean something. & that’s when it stops feeling like work and starts feeling like something much more meaningful.

The respect.

Not because you have all the answers, but because you show up consistently and do what you said you would do.

And then there’s the part that’s hard to explain.

The feeling you get when you realize your work is actually making a difference.

Helping someone feel more secure.
More clear.
More confident about what’s ahead.

Knowing that the decisions you helped guide play a role in someone’s future.

Their goals.
Their family.
Their kids.

That’s the part that stays with you.

Because over time, it’s not just the work that compounds.....
It’s the impact!

And you don’t always see it right away.
But when you do, you realize it was worth it.

Most federal employees I sit down with have a retirement plan that looks something like this:

• A pension they’re counting on
• A TSP that’s been set up for years
• A general idea of when they want to retire
• Everything “in place,” but not fully thought through

On the surface, it feels like everything is handled.

But in reality:

→ Retirement timing often affects pension outcomes more than people expect
→ TSP investments don’t always match how the money will be used later
→ Income sources can end up uncoordinated and harder to rely on
The issue isn’t that any of these pieces are wrong.

It’s that most people set them up once
…and don’t always revisit how they work together over time.

What I typically help people do is:

• Walk through how their pension actually works
• Review their TSP and how it fits into their overall plan
• Map out when each income source begins
• Structure a clear income strategy for retirement
• Identify opportunities to make the plan more efficient over time

At the end of the day, the goal isn’t just to have everything in place.

It’s to understand how it all works together
and feel confident heading into retirement.

One of the most important questions
Many federal employees can’t clearly answer is:
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭?

It’s easy to focus on balances and benefits.

→ Pension estimates.
→ TSP accounts.
→ Future Social Security.

But those numbers alone
Don’t explain how income will actually show up.

Each piece follows its own rules.
Its own timing.
Its own structure.

Some income starts right away.
Some requires decisions.
Some depends on when you choose to access it.

How these pieces come together......
This is what determines how retirement actually feels.

Without that clarity, even a strong plan can feel uncertain.

Understanding how income is created, when it begins,
& how it changes over time is what makes a plan truly work.

Early career: “I’ll figure retirement out later.”

Mid-career: “I should probably start looking into this.”

A few years before retirement: “I wish I understood this earlier.”

That’s where retirement often gets harder than it needs to be.

It’s always better to understand these decisions earlier than to figure everything out
when the timeline suddenly starts to feel real.

3 Retirement Risks that are often overlooked:

#𝟏 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤:

Retirement is no longer a short chapter.
It can easily last 25 to 30 years.

The longer the timeline, the less room there is for small mistakes.
What looks sustainable over ten years can look very different over thirty.

#2 𝐓𝐚𝐱 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤:

A pension is taxable.
Traditional TSP withdrawals are taxable.
Social Security can become taxable depending on your total income.

Retirement doesn’t remove taxes.
It simply changes how and when you pay them.

Two retirees can average the same long-term return.

If one experiences market declines early while taking withdrawals and the other does not, the long-term outcome can be dramatically different.
