IRS Releases Draft 2027 Form W-4: What Employers Need to Know
The IRS has issued a draft version of the 2027 Form W-4 (Employee’s Withholding Certificate), introducing updates that reflect new deductions for qualified tips and overtime compensation.
Key changes include expanded lines within the Step 4(b) Deductions Worksheet, allowing eligible employees with income below $150,000 ($300,000 for married filing jointly) to estimate and claim: ✅ Up to $25,000 in qualified tip deductions
✅ Up to $12,500 in qualified overtime compensation deductions ($25,000 for married filing jointly)
While the familiar five-step structure remains intact, several important figures, including the child tax credit and standard deduction amounts, are still listed as placeholders in the draft.
Important for employers: This is a draft form only. Employers should not distribute or accept the draft Form W-4 and should wait for the IRS to release the final version before making payroll system updates or revising employee communications.
Staying ahead of these changes will help ensure a smooth transition once final guidance is issued.
