IR-2021-59, March 17, 2021 — The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced today that the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021.

The IRS will never send you any unsolicited email or email you about the status of your tax refund.

A ‘little’ bit of relief from the IRS, if you procrastinated yesterday and didn’t properly extend your federal return yesterday you still can do so today. I do not believe the FTB is participating though.

Tomorrow is the individual tax filing due date - 041718. But! Never fear, you may obtain six month extension by filing IRS Form 4868. Remember, the extension is only an extension of time to file and NOT extension of time to pay. So if you believe you may owe with your 2017 tax filing be sure to remit that with your extension. For California use FTB Form 3519 for California, but only if you believe you will owe. Otherwise, for California you do not need to file a paper extension.
