🚨 Nonprofit leaders: there’s one board mistake that could quietly put your tax-exempt status — and your reputation — at risk.

The wild part?
It happens in well-run organizations.
By responsible boards.
And most have no idea they’re doing it.

When the IRS or watchdogs look closer, this one oversight can raise eyebrows fast.

Think nonprofits don’t pay taxes? Think again.
If your organization earns money from activities unrelated to your mission, that income could be taxable under the IRS’s Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) rules. ⚠️
Example: A museum running a coffee shop open to the general public.
Occasional income is usually fine, but ongoing side businesses must be reported—and penalties for ignoring this can be serious.
Unsure if an activity triggers UBIT? Comment “UBIT” and let’s review it together 👇

Nonprofit work is heart work.
And heart work deserves rest.

Today, we honor the leaders who carried missions through uncertainty, stewarded every dollar with care, and showed up for their communities—again and again.

May this Christmas bring peace, renewal, and a quieter reminder: you are making a difference.

Donor-restricted funds must be used exactly as specified—like scholarships or specific programs.
Unrestricted funds? They cover general operations like payroll, utilities, or rent.

⚠️ Misusing restricted funds is a top compliance mistake and can destroy donor trust.
And remember: donor restrictions are permanent, but board designations can be changed.

Has your organization ever dealt with restricted donations? How do you track them?

⚠️ Nonprofit leaders: one overlooked receipt mistake could put your next grant — and your credibility — at risk.

Here’s the problem 👇
It’s not fraud.
It’s not overspending.
It’s something way more ordinary… and it happens in almost every growing nonprofit.

But when auditors or funders come knocking?
That “small” habit turns into a major red flag.

Here’s the truth: you can’t afford to learn this lesson the hard way.

Yes, even the smallest nonprofits need strong internal controls.
You don’t need a big team to protect your finances.
Simple steps—like having one person open mail and another record deposits—can prevent fraud and catch mistakes early.
Internal controls = separation of duties.

When one person handles everything, risks grow fast.
Need sample internal controls for small teams? Comment “CONTROLS” and we’ll share templates 👇

⚠️ Nearly half of nonprofits are stretched thin financially.
Innovation, partnership, and community support aren’t optional anymore—they’re essential.
Let’s build stronger, more resilient missions together. 💪

12/16/2025

🛍️ Great mission idea — but watch out for the IRS rules!
Running a thrift store can be tax-exempt if it directly supports your mission or uses donated goods. Otherwise, it could trigger unrelated business income tax.
Not sure if your nonprofit’s side income is taxable? Comment “TAX” and we’ll help you understand how to record it properly.
Sound financial planning keeps your nonprofit compliant and sustainable 💼📊

⚠️ Nonprofit leaders: one common email move can shatter donor trust in just 48 hours.

The worst part?
It doesn’t look like a mistake when you hit “send.”
In fact… it probably feels productive.

If you’re sending year-end or campaign appeals, this is your warning: there’s a better way to protect donor trust (and boost response).
