It's September! With summer winding down, your books have likely had a busy few months. 📊

Before the fall rush arrives, this is a smart moment to take stock. A quick check now is a lot easier than untangling nine months of records in January.

Worth a look this week:

• Are your accounts reconciled through the end of July?
• Are expenses categorized, or is everything still sitting in one bucket?
• Do you know your actual profit margin right now, not just your revenue?
• Are your estimated tax payments tracking with how the year is actually going?
• Any big purchases coming that should be timed with taxes in mind?

If any of those made you wince, that is useful information. It is far better to know in August than to find out at filing time.

• A 529 plan lets your education savings grow tax free when used for qualified expenses, and New York offers a state tax deduction for contributions
• The American Opportunity Credit can be worth up to 2,500 dollars per student during the first four years of college
• The Lifetime Learning Credit can help with graduate school and continuing education
• Certain K-12 tuition costs may qualify for 529 withdrawals as well

There are income limits and plenty of fine print, so it is worth a conversation before you assume you do or do not qualify.
