Selling digital products in California? A new sales tax rule starts January 1, 2027.
SB 122 expands Californiaβs definition of taxable tangible personal property to include certain digital products, whether theyβre transferred on physical media, delivered electronically, or accessed remotely. Some exemptions and exceptions may apply, so donβt assume every digital product is treated the same.
Use this time to:
β
Review the digital products and access you sell
β
Check how exemptions and customer locations may affect your transactions
β
Prepare your tax, invoicing, and reporting processes
If your business sells software, subscriptions, downloads, or other digital products, get clear on how the new rule may apply before it takes effect. AMCFO can help you organize the financial and compliance details.
