Depreciation changes for 2025:
The OBBBA permanently reinstates 100% bonus depreciation under §168(k) for qualified property acquired and placed in service after Jan. 19, 2025
Qualified property continues to include new or used depreciable property with a recovery period of 20 years or less and certain computer software, water utility property, and qualified improvement property
The OBBBA creates an elective 100% depreciation allowance under §168(n) for Qualified Production Property (QPP), defined as nonresidential real property used as an integral part of a Qualified Production Activity (manufacturing, production, or refining of a qualified product). These buildings are now eligible for 100% bonus depreciation, but only if placed in service before January 1, 2031.

Section 179

Prior to the OBBBA, the inflation-indexed §179 expensing limit for 2025 was $1,250,000, with a phaseout threshold of $3,130,000
The OBBBA increases the statutory maximum amount that a taxpayer may expense under §179 to $2,500,000 and raises the phaseout threshold to $4,000,000. These changes apply to property placed in service in tax years beginning after December 31, 2024.

Postmark Rule
The rule explicitly warns that customer-applied pre-printed labels (e.g., from Self-Service Kiosks, Click-N-Ship, or meters) only show when postage was printed, not when the USPS accepted the item.

This change in USPS processes will have a potentially significant impact on tax filings. IRC §7502 specifically relies upon the postmark date applied to an envelope to determine timely filing if the document is not physically delivered to the IRS office by the due date for such document. Get the post office to stamp the envelope to avoid this.

Self-Employment and Tips
Sue is a self-employed hair stylist. Her customers pay her $30,000 of tips during the year. Most of her customers pay with a card, and so $20,000 of the tips are on a credit card.

As long as her merchant processor can separately track these tips and report them on Form 1099-K then Sue can claim a tip deduction on her personal tax return for the $20,000 (assuming her merchant processor accurately reflects the tip amount on the 1099-K).

The tips paid in cash would not be deductible as they are not on a reporting form which the IRS requires.

An IP PIN is a six-digit number that prevents someone else from filing a federal tax return using your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. It’s a vital tool for ensuring the safety of your personal and financial information.

The IRS will accept Forms 1040, 1040-NR and 1040-SS even if a dependent has already been claimed on a previously filed return if the primary taxpayer on the second return includes a valid IP PIN. This will reduce the time for the agency to receive the tax return and accelerate the issuance of tax refunds for those with duplicate dependent returns.

The best way to sign up for an IP PIN is through your IRS Online Account. If you are unable to create an online account, alternative methods are available, such as in-person authentication at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. More information is available on how to sign up at Get an identity protection PIN (IP PIN).
