One thing I've noticed over the years...

The best retirement plans usually start with a conversation, not a spreadsheet.

The couples who talk about what they want life to look like often make decisions with much more confidence later.

Here's my question:

When was the last time you and your spouse talked about retirement... without talking about money?

The biggest retirement myth?

That there's some magic number that tells you when you're ready.

For years, people have chased $1 million because that's what they've heard they need.

But here's what I've learned after helping hundreds of families prepare for retirement:

Two people can each have $1 million and have completely different retirements.

Why?

Because retirement isn't determined by an account balance.

It's determined by the income your assets can generate, the taxes you'll pay, your healthcare costs, Social Security decisions, and whether your plan can weather life's surprises.

If you've ever wondered, "Do I have enough?" this week's video is for you.

If someone told you this morning...

"You can retire next Friday."

Would you?

Or would you keep working?

There isn't a right answer.

I'm always fascinated by the reasons behind people's answers. They're almost never about money.

Can I ask you something?

What's one thing you've been telling yourself you'll do "someday"?

Take the trip?

Learn golf?

Visit your grandkids more often?

Start volunteering?

We all have a "someday" list. Sometimes the hardest part is deciding it's time to move one of those things to "today."

I'd love to hear yours.

One of the quickest ways to become unhappy in retirement is to start measuring your life against someone else's.

A friend buys a second home.

Someone takes a luxury vacation.

A neighbor talks about an investment they made.

And before long, people start wondering:

"Are we behind?"

But here's what I've learned...

Two people can have the exact same amount of money and need completely different retirement plans.

Why?

Because they want different things.

One person wants to leave a legacy.

Another wants to create memories.

One values security.

Another values flexibility.

The goal isn't to build the retirement everyone else has.

The goal is to build the retirement that's right for you.

As we celebrate Independence Day, I've been thinking about what freedom really means.

When we're younger, freedom might mean adventure.

Building a career.

Raising a family.

As we get older, it often begins to look a little different.

More time with grandchildren.

Traveling without watching the calendar.

Taking a Wednesday afternoon off just because you can.

Or simply enjoying a quiet cup of coffee with nowhere you have to be.

However you define it, I hope you have the opportunity to spend today with the people who matter most.

Happy Independence Day from all of us at Monolith Financial.

Just because two people retire together doesn't mean they picture retirement the same way.

One person may dream about travel and adventure.

The other may want peace, hobbies, and time at home.

Neither is wrong.

But too many couples assume they'll figure it out later.

The most successful retirements often begin with honest conversations about what each person truly wants this next stage of life to look like.

Because retirement works better when both people still feel like they get to be themselves.

It's Good News Friday.

Not every win shows up on a statement.

Sometimes it's a garden that's finally producing.

A project you've been working on.

A friendship that's grown stronger.

A new hobby.

A healthier habit.

A goal you've been quietly working toward.

As we head into the weekend, we'd love to hear from you:

What's growing in your life right now?

Retirement can look a lot of different ways.

For some people, it's traveling the world.

For others, it's spending more time with family.

Some dream of hiking mountains.

Others want to volunteer, pursue a hobby, or simply enjoy slower mornings.

The mistake is thinking your retirement should look like someone else's.

The best retirement plan isn't the one that impresses other people.

It's the one that gives you the freedom to live the life you've been looking forward to.

That's why retirement planning isn't just about numbers.

It's about understanding what matters most to you and building a plan around it.

What does your ideal retirement look like?

Imagine it's Saturday morning in retirement.

No alarms.

No meetings.

No deadlines.

Where are you?

Who are you with?

What are you doing?

More importantly...

How do you feel?

We ask this question because retirement planning doesn't start with money.

It starts with what you want your money to accomplish. That's why one of the first exercises we use is helping people envision their ideal retirement weekend before we ever start talking numbers.
