Two deadlines. One date.

October 15 covers two different groups.

If you filed an extension on your individual return (Form 1040), that return is due.

If your business is a calendar-year C-corp on extension (Form 1120), that return is due the same day.

This is the final extension for individual returns. There's no further extension available after October 15.

Give yourself time to get it done instead of scrambling on the 15th.

Choosing between an employee and a contractor can look like a simple price comparison. It rarely is. Here is what the numbers should tell you before you decide.

1. Price the full cost. An employee costs more than their wage. Add the employer share of payroll taxes, unemployment taxes, workers' comp, benefits, and the equipment they need. A contractor's hourly rate looks higher because those costs are built into it, so compare the fully loaded cost to the rate, not the wage to the rate.

2. Match cost to workload. Steady, year-round work and short-term or seasonal projects can point in different directions. Pull your last twelve months of hours and see how consistent the demand really was before you commit either way.

3. Check classification first. This one is not a choice you make on price alone. The IRS looks at behavioral control, financial control, and the relationship between the parties. If you direct how and when the work gets done, the worker may be an employee no matter what the contract says. Misclassifying can leave you responsible for employment taxes, and state rules can differ too.

Run the numbers, then confirm how the person can be classified before you sign anything or put anyone on payroll.

The deadline rush is over and Q3 just wrapped. This is the quiet window where a little bookkeeping housekeeping pays off later. A short reset list:

✓ Match the books to your bank and card statements through September 30, while any mismatch is still easy to trace.

✓ Take a look at anything parked in "uncategorized" or "miscellaneous." If you can't remember what it was today, it will be harder in January.

✓ Scan your open invoices. The busy weeks before a deadline are exactly when billing follow-ups get dropped.

✓ Make sure receipts, invoices, and statements are saved somewhere you can find them, with a backup. The IRS expects business owners to be able to support their expenses.

✓ Pull a Q3 profit and loss and compare it to the last one. What changed? Are you within your budget? Better to notice now than at year-end.

Thirty minutes on this now can save hours later. Which one are you tackling first?

"Bookkeeping" is one of those words everyone's heard, but most people couldn't tell you what actually happens behind it. Here's the real breakdown:

Every sale, purchase, and payment gets recorded as it happens. That running record, the general ledger, is the foundation everything else gets built on.

Each month, those records get checked against actual bank and credit card statements. That reconciliation step is what catches the missed charge, the duplicate entry, or the typo before it becomes a bigger problem.

W-2 or 1099???

The IRS looks at the actual working relationship, not what you call it. Three things matter most:
1. Behavioral control (who directs how and when the work gets done)
2. Financial control (who controls the business side, like expenses and tools)
3. Type of relationship (contracts, benefits, whether the work is ongoing).

No single factor decides it, and there's no set number that tips the scale. The IRS says to weigh the whole relationship.

One more thing worth knowing for 2026: the threshold for issuing a 1099-NEC just went up from $600 to $2,000. If you paid a contractor less than that this year, you're not required to send them one.

Most business owners can tell you if last month felt good or bad. Fewer can tell you why. That is what KPIs are for. Think of them as the vital signs of your business.

You do not need twenty dashboards. Start with these three:

1. Gross profit margin. Revenue minus the direct costs of doing the work, divided by revenue. If it slips, your pricing or your costs need a closer look. Formula: (Revenue - Cost of Goods Sold) ÷ Revenue × 100

2. Net profit margin. What is left after every expense, divided by revenue. This is the number that answers whether the business actually kept money. Formula: Net Income ÷ Revenue × 100

3. Accounts receivable turnover. How many times you collect what customers owe you over a set period, like a month, quarter, or year. Credit sales for that period divided by your average receivables for the same period. A higher number generally means customers are paying faster, and a falling number can leave you short even in a busy month. Formula: Net Credit Sales ÷ Average Accounts Receivable

Pull these from your books once a month and watch the trend. One month is a snapshot. Three months is a story.

Which of these three are you currently tracking? Are you tracking other KPIs? Tell us in the comments, or message us if you want help setting them up.

Mark it down. October 15 is coming.

If you filed an extension on your individual return (Form 1040), this is your deadline. It's also the extended filing deadline for calendar-year C-corp returns (Form 1120).

Give yourself time to pull everything together instead of scrambling the week of.

Q4 is around the corner. Starting now, you have fourteen weeks before the books close on 2026, which is enough time to make real moves if you start now instead of in December.

1. Review where you stand. Pull your year to date numbers and compare them to the goal you set in January. That gap is exactly what Q4 needs to close.

2. Time big purchases. Equipment, software, and other qualifying property placed in service by December 31 can usually be fully deducted the same year under current tax rules. If a purchase is already on your roadmap for early next year, timing it before year-end instead might make sense.

3. Start the 2027 budget. Waiting until January means building next year's plan under pressure. Starting the draft now gives you room to actually think it through.

None of this is a substitute for a real planning conversation about your specific numbers. It is a starting checklist for the one you should be having.

Tomorrow is the day.

If your partnership return (Form 1065) or S-corp return (Form 1120-S) is on extension, September 15 is the deadline.

Your third quarter estimated tax payment is due the same day if you're self-employed or run a business.

If you have not filed or paid yet, tomorrow is the last chance before penalties start accruing.

Your chart of accounts is quietly doing a lot of work in the background. Here's some things to consider:

✓ Every account you create has to fit under one of five types: assets, liabilities, equity, revenue, or expenses.

✓ Leave gaps in your numbering, like 1010, 1020, 1030 instead of 1001, 1002, 1003. It gives you room to add subaccounts later without renumbering everything.

✓ Filing Schedule C is a different exercise than filing 1120-S or 1065. Categories built for one won't map cleanly onto another, so build around the return you actually file.

✓ That coffee with a client and the flight to go see them aren't the same kind of expense. Meals carry their own deduction cap, so they need their own line, not a shared one.

✓ Selling a product? Materials belong in Cost of Goods Sold, not tucked into "Supplies." Otherwise your profit margin is telling you a story that isn't true.

Which of these is already true for your books, and which one's still on the to-do list?
