🌟 OWNER SPOTLIGHT: Meet Jill Shugart Atwood, CPA 🌟

If you’ve worked with our firm, you know that family and community aren’t just words to us — they are the foundation of everything we do. Today, we’re shining a well-deserved spotlight on the driving force behind that philosophy: our majority owner, Jill Shugart Atwood!

Born and raised right here in St. Augustine, Jill learned early on the value of strong roots, lasting relationships, and serving the community she calls home.

💼 The Journey to the Helm:

📚 Solid Foundations
After completing her advanced accounting education and gaining valuable experience at a major firm, Jill joined McGhin, Calhoun & Sundeman in 1994.

🎓 The Milestone
In April 1998, Jill officially earned her CPA license, setting the stage for a distinguished career in accounting and client service.

🏢 A New Era
In 2006, Jill co-founded Calhoun & Atwood, LLC. Following her partner’s retirement late last year, Jill stepped into the role of majority owner, continuing the firm’s legacy of trusted, personalized service and top-tier accounting expertise.

For Jill, accounting has never been just about numbers — it’s about the people behind them. She takes tremendous pride in treating every client like family and building relationships that last a lifetime.

🏡 Beyond the Desk:

When she’s not helping clients navigate their accounting and tax needs, Jill is embracing a beautifully busy and love-filled family life. Together with her husband, Mitch Hall, they are the proud parents of five children and incredibly blessed grandparents to nine grandchildren.

Employee Spotlight – Veronica Hartley
Veronica is the newest member of our team, joining us right in the middle of an extremely busy tax season and stepping into the Administrative Assistant/Receptionist role as though she had been here all along. Her willingness to learn, adapt, and do whatever is needed as a true team player has already made her a tremendous asset to the firm.
It’s never easy starting somewhere new — especially at a CPA firm during tax season — but Veronica handled the challenge with charm, grace, and professionalism. From assisting clients to helping keep the office running smoothly during one of the busiest times of the year, she quickly became an important part of the team.
We are very fortunate that Veronica chose to become part of the Calhoun & Atwood family, and we look forward to watching her continue to grow with us.

Employee Spotlight – Matthew “Matt” Mitrega
Flagler College graduate Matthew “Matt” Mitrega joined the firm in late 2025 as a Staff Accountant. While earning his Accounting degree, Matt also competed in NCAA Lacrosse, where he developed the ability to think fast, move fast, and shift gears efficiently — skills that have translated seamlessly into the accounting profession. Matt is also a true team player, something that has made him a great fit within our firm culture.
Since joining the firm, Matt has proven himself to be a quick study with a strong work ethic and a willingness to take on new challenges. His drive, adaptability, and team-oriented mindset have made him a tremendous asset to our firm, and we are excited to watch his continued growth and success.

Employee Spotlight: Natalie Burton

Natalie joined the firm in fall of 2025, filling a much-needed receptionist role. Coming to us with more than seven years of bookkeeping experience, we knew early on that we wanted to transition her into handling some of the bookkeeping needs of the office. What we did not realize at the time was just how naturally she would transition into the role of Office Manager while at the same time handling bookkeeping for several clients. Her ability to juggle the two positions while maintaining her calm and professionalism has made her an incredible asset to our busy accounting firm.

Natalie’s dedication, adaptability, and steady presence help keep our office running smoothly every day, and we are grateful to have her as part of the team.

Brooke Garretson joined Calhoun & Atwood in January 2024 as an administrative assistant and quickly demonstrated both initiative and attention to detail, leading to her transition into her current role as a bookkeeper. Since joining the firm, Brooke has become a valuable part of the team, helping support both our staff and clients with her strong work ethic and willingness to learn. Her growth within the firm reflects her dedication and commitment to providing dependable service each day, and we are excited to continue watching her thrive in her career at Calhoun & Atwood.

Employee Spotlight: Damaris “Dee” Young
At Calhoun & Atwood, we are proud to spotlight Damaris “Dee” Young, whose dedication and leadership have helped shape our firm for nearly two decades.
Dee began her career in accounting working in data entry, where she quickly developed the organizational and bookkeeping skills that would become the foundation of her success. In 2006, she joined Calhoun & Atwood as Office Manager, taking on the critical responsibilities of running the office and managing the bookkeeping needs of our clients.
Over the years, Dee has become an invaluable part of the firm through her hard work, reliability, and unwavering commitment to both our team and our clients. Her ability to keep everything moving smoothly behind the scenes has earned her a reputation as “the glue of the firm.”
In recognition of her years of dedication and the tremendous impact she has made, Dee became a part owner of the firm in December 2025.
We are incredibly fortunate to have Dee as an integral part of the Calhoun & Atwood family, and we look forward to many more years of success together
