Welcome, September. The calendar may be moving toward fall, but Louisiana hasn’t received that message yet.

The afternoons are still hot, outside work still has to be planned around the temperature, and the fans aren’t going anywhere. At the same time, fall projects are showing up on the calendar and year-end no longer feels far enough away to ignore.

The same overlap happens in a business. September arrives while summer work is still being finished, but the responsibilities that come with the last part of the year have already started asking for attention.

Before the calendar gets any fuller, take a look at the task that has followed you from one month to the next. It may be a report that still doesn’t make sense, bookkeeping that needs to be brought current, or a process that causes the same frustration every time it comes around.

September doesn’t have to be the month when everything gets fixed. It can be the month when that one recurring problem finally gets a proper place on the schedule.

Here’s to a steady September and, hopefully, a little cooler weather before it’s over.

The Office Dogs have been investigating bookkeeping.

Max announced that he found the missing receipt.
It was a leaf.
He maintains “dat the shape was suspicious and further review beez required”.

Pepper organized everything into one large pile. He included three toys, a sock, two pieces of mail, and something no one has agreed to touch yet.

Hedy reviewed the situation, removed Max from the investigation, and returned all financial work to Momma Sarah.

Zach served as Senior Advisor throughout the process.
He slept.

Per Hedy, the investigation is now closed.

Hedy has completed a workplace compliance inspection.

The office temperature was acceptable. The water bowls were full. All employees had access to a comfortable place to rest.

The toy storage area did not pass.

According to Hedy:
three toys were left in the hallway,
one tennis ball and a kong toy were found in her bed under Momma Sarah’s desk,
and somebody had removed the squeaker from an approved stuffed animal.

Max denied involvement before anyone asked.

Pepper offered to help with cleanup but became distracted by the toys.

Zach remained in his assigned resting area throughout the inspection. Hedy noted that this was the first time all day someone had followed procedure.

Her final report states, “Eberything would run much smoother if da boys would just listen.”

Corrective action is now underway.

Late August is when summer and fall both seem to be on the calendar at the same time.

Here in Louisiana, the temperature still says summer without any doubt. Outside work has to be planned around the heat, and nobody is putting away the fans or turning off the A/C any time soon.

The calendar looks different. Fall projects are starting to come up in conversations, schedules are filling again, and year-end no longer feels as far away as it did a few weeks ago.

It’s still August, but September is beginning to make itself known.

When we talk with someone about bookkeeping support, we don’t start by asking how many transactions they have each month.

We want to know what’s not working.

Are the books behind?
Does the bank account reconcile while the reports still look wrong?
Is one person trying to keep up with the bookkeeping between everything else on the schedule?
Are the reports available but not useful when a decision needs to be made?

Update: QuickBooks says the issue is resolved. The actual program says "think again". While it does seem to be working better than before (which isn't saying much today) there is still a long delay in the windows refreshing, so don't be surprised if you see that spin on a blank window this afternoon.

If QuickBooks Online seemed unusually slow yesterday or today, it wasn’t just you.

Intuit has reported a latency issue affecting some QBO users and says its engineering team is investigating the cause and working to restore normal performance.

So, if you’ve been staring at a spinning circle, waiting forever for a screen to load, or wondering what in the world is going on with QuickBooks, this may be why.

Sometimes the problem really is QuickBooks. 😄

I’ll keep an eye on Intuit’s updates as they work on the issue.
