Founder & Financial Planner

With 10+ years’ experience, we make money talk easy—offering comprehensive financial planning and investment help for individuals, families, and communities. Hi, I'm Mai,

I founded Heartworth Financial to offer personalized, judgment-free financial guidance to first-generation wealth builders. Throughout my career as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®, I’ve had the privilege of working with professio

nals, particularly physicians, helping them navigate student loans, career decisions, benefits, and long-term financial planning. While my experience has been rooted in supporting physicians at all stages of their careers, I’ve learned that the challenges of building wealth and managing finances are universal. Whether you’re in medicine, another profession, or just starting out on your wealth-building journey, I believe everyone deserves access to financial education and guidance. At Heartworth Financial, my goal is to help you align your financial decisions with your values, empowering you to focus on what matters most: your family, career, and personal life.

Feeling overwhelmed trying to budget or picking the right app to manage your money?

My new blog post breaks down a simple way to organize your spending and includes a comparison of three popular budgeting apps:
✔️Monarch Money
✔️YNAB
✔️Rocket Money

Check it out here: http://bit.ly/4kvfs3t

And if you’ve tried any of these tools, I’d love to hear what’s worked (or not) for you!

Budgeting isn’t about perfection or restriction. At its core, it’s a way to create structure around your money so you can stay on top of bills, spend with less stress, and make progress toward goals that matter to you. For some people, that means tracking every detail. For others, it’s more ab...

Supporting Minnesota’s new personal finance graduation requirement means helping teachers feel confident answering the real questions students have.

Yesterday, I joined a panel of industry professionals speaking to teachers training through the MCEE Certification: High School Personal Finance program. We discussed practical tools like debit cards, how to bust myths such as “debt is bad,” how to reach students without strong financial role models, and how to address tricky topics like crypto and stock trading.

As a Hmong woman and first-gen wealth builder, I know how powerful early financial education can be, especially for underserved communities.

Thanks to Minnesota Council on Economic Education for leading this important work. I’m excited to see the impact ahead!

Mini Money Minute 🕒

Let’s talk about something that too often gets pushed aside:

Estate Planning.

It feels complicated. It brings up things we’d rather not think about. But at its core, estate planning is about taking care of the people you love just in case life doesn’t go as planned.

When someone passes, there can be so much confusion… hurt feelings… and sadly, fights over money and what someone would have wanted. 💔

I’ve seen it. You’ve probably seen it too.

When wishes aren’t written down, families are left to guess. And sometimes, those guesses tear people apart, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Why it matters:
✨ Estate planning is an act of love and clarity.
✨ It gives your family peace in a time of pain.
✨ It says: “I cared enough to make this easier for you.”

Whether it’s setting up a will, naming a guardian for your kids, or creating a trust, you’re giving your family the gift of certainty.

And for those who are single or don’t have children, you’re not off the hook! A Health Care Directive and Power of Attorney are still incredibly important so someone you trust can make decisions if you can’t.

What holds people back?
❌ “I’m not old enough.”
❌ “I don’t have enough money.”
❌ “It’s too overwhelming.”

But getting started can be simple.

🛠️ Some people start with online tools like Trust & Will, which can be a simple, cost-effective way to get the basics in place.

💬 For anything beyond the basics, working with an estate planning attorney is often the best way to ensure your wishes are clearly documented and legally sound.

📩 I’m not an attorney and don’t draft documents myself, but I’d recommend reaching out to someone like MY Minnesota Estate Attorney, PLLC. They’ll walk you through everything with care and clarity.

At Heartworth Financial, we help you look at the full picture, because estate planning isn’t just a legal task, it’s a key piece of your financial life. We’ll make sure your plan works together, thoughtfully and intentionally. 💜

Helping aspiring financial planners take their first steps into the profession is something I care deeply about.

Through Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota and the Minnesota Financial Empowerment Initiative - MNFEI, I’ve been volunteering to support students preparing for the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam by offering one-on-one financial planning guidance and education on debt management, savings, and investing.

I’ve also had the chance to return as a guest speaker, sharing how to apply tax strategies to real-world situations, explore career paths, and understand what employers are looking for when hiring.

I didn’t learn about financial planning as a career until college. Now, as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional, I’m proud to help others discover this path. 💜

👉 If you or someone you know is exploring a career in financial planning, I’m always happy to connect!

Your money habits didn't come out of nowhere.

They were shaped by the lessons you absorbed growing up. Lessons about hard work, saving, giving to family, and sometimes staying silent about financial struggles.

These early experiences create your money scripts, which are the hidden beliefs that guide your money decisions today.

💡The good news? You have the power to recognize those old money scripts and rewrite the ones that no longer serve you.

In my first blog, I’m sharing how our upbringing shapes our money habits and how you can start taking action to build a healthier relationship with your money.

A big thanks to the doctors and volunteers who organized the Hmong Medical Association Health Fair! It was a meaningful day connecting with community members and highlighting how financial health is an important part of overall well-being.

What made it even more special was getting to share space with other Hmong financial professionals. There aren’t many of us working in areas like financial planning and investment management, so having three of us in the same room felt especially meaningful.

Fue Yang - Equitable Advisors
Maikou Vu - Edward Jones

We’re proud to represent our community in a profession where we’re still underrepresented, and to be part of conversations about financial health that truly matter.

Grateful to everyone who stopped by to chat! 💜
