I've never been a pushy sales person type, but as my pal Cindy Schroeder reminded me last night, it's not pushy to let people know something EXISTS that might be of value to them.

A lot of you know I admin a free (and incredibly valuable) group here called QuickBooks for Nonprofits. I've also got a much smaller paid community called the Nonprofit Accounting Krewe. In my head, they are basically The Avengers. They are the people you'll find answering the questions in the facebook group because they have a PILE of knowledge, but this is where THEY go when they have a question or need to vent in a safe space.

On yesterday's Krewe call, we went deep on accounting for endowments & quasi-endowments, heard from a member who is finally REALLY documenting her excellent scholarship process, and commiserated with another who stepped into a much bigger mess than she expected, all at a friends and family discount. I freaking love these people!

I don't post a lot about my smaller, paid community on Circle, known as the Nonprofit Accounting Krewe. It's the place where a lot of the folks you see answering questions here go when they have a question themselves, or want to refer a client to someone they trust.

When we do the monthly lunch and learns, for QuickBooks for Nonprofits, the Krewe gathers with the speaker for a debrief afterward. And we have internal Krewe calls twice a month, with peer support and wide-ranging discussions.
TODAY's call (coming up at noon) features a call with the developers at Instrumentl, which is rolling out a grants management feature to complement their long-standing grants application program. It's a great time to hear what they're planning, and to give input.

I haven't posted about this a lot, in part because I've been laying low for awhile, and also because I’m no kind of great salesman, but I run a couple of groups you should probably know about. One is right here on Facebook, with a large and diverse group of and folks: QuickBooks for Nonprofits. The other lives on Circle and is a much smaller, paid community that just celebrated its 1st anniversary. Y'all... don't do this. The front page of the 990 is like an elevator pitch for your organization. You've got four whole lines. Surely your mission can fit there. (and if it can't, it might be time for a rewrite.)

We make things so much harder than they have to be.

Here’s a guiding principle: what happens in the accounting file should be what actually happened.

Full stop.

An example can be helpful.

• You get a refund from a vendor when you return something purchased with a debit card. (I don’t recommend debit cards, btw. If they are compromised, they’re a direct link to your bank account.)
• It’s tempting to treat this as income, since it will increase the balance in your bank account, but ask yourself:
– are they a customer? (they are not)
– do you do something to earn this money? (you did not. you returned a purchased item.)
– is this a contribution to your org? (sorry, no)
• You are getting money from a VENDOR because you returned something you had previously bought and paid for

so.
The return should reduce (credit) the same expense account you used for the original purchase, and
the transaction should show up in the vendor record.

In QBO, a $0 vendor credit hits all the things.
• the first (positive) line goes to the original expense account
• the second (negative) line goes to the bank account

pretty easy, right?
