Many people think of financial planning as investments, retirement projections, and tax strategies.

But some of the biggest challenges families face happen in the quieter moments: finding important documents during a health event, locating passwords, understanding benefits, or helping aging parents navigate financial decisions.

In this month's newsletter, we're exploring what we think of as the quiet side of planning, including:

• A The New York Times feature we contributed to on organizing important documents with Nokbox: Organizing for your Next of Kin
• A thoughtful piece on aging parents and money conversations
• A guide to understanding your annual Oregon PERS statement
• A new plain-English resource on common trust structures

One of the less glamorous — but most meaningful — parts of financial planning is helping families prepare for the unexpected.

Collective Wealth Planning founder Brenna Baucum, CFP® was recently quoted in The New York Times Wirecutter article sharing her experience with Nokbox: Organizing for your Next of Kin, a tool designed to help loved ones access important financial and personal information during difficult times.

No one wants to think about emergencies, illness, or death. But a little organization today can spare the people you love a tremendous amount of stress later.

Doing what we can today to make tomorrow a little easier for the people we care about — that’s at the heart of thoughtful financial planning.

“Getting your affairs in order” sounds like a terrible chore. This estate management system makes it much easier (and even more enjoyable) than you might fear.

Over the past few years, one area of planning has been coming up more and more in conversations with clients: long-term care.

Not because it’s new—but because the numbers are changing.

Costs for home care and assisted living have risen significantly in recent years, and more than half of adults turning 65 today are expected to need some form of care in their lifetime. At the same time, many people still assume Medicare will cover it… which, in most cases, it won’t.

But what we've found is that long-term care planning isn’t really about solving for a future expense. It’s about preserving choice.

Choice in where you live.
Choice in how you’re cared for.
And protecting the people you love from having to make difficult decisions without a clear plan in place.

At the same time, these conversations sit alongside another important one—how retirement actually unfolds over time. Not just financially, but in terms of energy, independence, and how we want to spend our years.

This month’s newsletter touches on both:

• A perspective on how retirement evolves over time
• Planning considerations for women through a recent webinar from Willamette Wealth Collective with Willamette Legacy Law and Willamette Vital Health
• Navigating finances after the loss of a loved one as we explore with the team at Caregiver Help
• And a brief Q1 market update

Most Oregon Public Employees Retirement System members don’t realize they may be able to contribute up to ~$147,000 in the final three years before retirement.

It’s called the 457(b) 3-year catch-up — and it can be a powerful tool, especially if your income is higher near retirement or you’re considering a PERS work-back.

But (like most things PERS-related), the rules are nuanced:

• It depends on your plan
• It depends on unused contribution capacity
• And the timing? It really matters

In our latest blog/video, Collective Wealth Planning founder Brenna Baucum, CFP® walks through how it works and what to watch out for.

In times of uncertainty, staying connected matters.

Our latest newsletter opens with reflections on how stress and heavy headlines can affect the way we think, feel, and make decisions — and why choosing connection, or “flocking,” can help us stay grounded.

We’re also sharing practical planning resources this month, including Medicare IRMAA guidance, long-term care planning, Oregon PERS insights, and market commentary.
