IR-2025-94, Sept. 23, 2025 — The Internal Revenue Service, working with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, today announced that paper tax refund checks for individual taxpayers will be phased out beginning on Sept. 30, 2025, as required by Executive Order 14247, to the extent permitted by law.

On August 14, 2025, the US Department of the Treasury announced that the federal government will stop issuing paper checks for most federal payments on September 30, 2025.

Most federal benefit checks are already electronically deposited but if someone is still receiving paper checks from Social Security, Veterans benefits or any other federal benefits program they will need to contact the federal agency that is providing the benefit by the end of September.

During this changeover, recipients need to be extra cautious of impersonation scams. Do not respond to an email request. Remember, all US government web sites are .gov NOT .com web sites. If someone is not sure what to do, they should contact their banker.
