If you’re helping a child, a parent, or an employee build their first retirement savings, a new federal program is worth knowing about: the Saver’s Match.
Under the SECURE 2.0 Act, it replaces the old Saver’s Credit with something more direct. Eligible savers can receive a 50% federal match on the first $2,000 they contribute to a retirement account each year, up to $1,000 annually, paid straight into their retirement account.
A few key points:
• Contributions made for the 2027 tax year are the first to qualify, with payments beginning in 2028.
• It applies to contributions to an employer-sponsored retirement plan or an IRA.
• Eligibility is focused on low- and moderate-income taxpayers, and income limits apply.
• The IRS began the rulemaking process in August 2026, so some details are still being finalized.
For families, this matters. A young worker contributing $2,000 could see it become $3,000, with the government providing the extra $1,000. That is a meaningful head start on compounding.
From my experience, the biggest wins in retirement planning often come from combining the programs most people overlook. If someone in your family could benefit from the Saver’s Match, this is a good moment to make sure their contribution strategy is set up correctly.
