In reviewing the new law regarding the Bexar County current shutdown for the Coronavirus, tax preparation is exempted from the mandatory shutdown. While our office is in Comal County, we respect our neighboring county choices. We will therefore continue seeing folks, but are totally respectful of client's decision to hold off in coming to do taxes. We are also willing to come out to your car, get your information that you brought, go into the office to prepare the taxes and come back with questions or a completed tax return. The 90 day delay in filing taxes is available of course and anyone who chooses to reschedule is obviously acceptable to us.

These are unusual times, and we always want to respect everyone's first priority of health. Feel free to call us with questions at 210/658-2587 or email us at: [email protected]. We are still busy seeing clients, washing down the areas after each client visit, and maintaining safe social distancing in each office.

We continue to pray for all of our clients.

We will celebrate his life and then following for anyone that would care to attend, we will have a burial service at Ft. Sam Houston Shelter 3 to bury his and his beloved wife Lois' ashes. We will serve a lunch/snack at the community center.

Updated information about IRS processing for tax season.

In case you were wondering, the IRS has announced that they will begin processing tax returns electronically on January 28th. We can prepare ahead of time, but will be required to hold off until the 28th to submit. The "government shutdown" will not affect tax return processing or refunds.

If you are concerned with the impact you may feel with respect to the tax cuts passed by congress last December that start with 2018, you can review all of your year to date pay stubs as of the end of September. Take the federal tax withholding year to date and divide by ".75". This will annualize your withholdings for federal taxes for 2018. You can then compare how much your tax was for 2017 and get a glimpse of how you may stand. Keep in mind however, that most people will owe less federal tax in 2018 than 2017 because of the tax reduction. I probably helped 700 people with 2017 taxes, and 16 clients out of the 700 were negatively impacted by the new tax law. That means that approximately 98% of our tax clients that I helped will pay less taxes in 2018. Contact me with questions.

With this apparent government shutdown, I wanted to address a few issues regarding taxes: All tax law rules including filing deadlines, reporting, etc. don't change. We will be able to process returns as of January 29, 2018 even if the government is still shut down, including efiling. If the shutdown is prolonged, there may be a delay in processing refunds by the IRS. This is a very fluid situation and could be adjusted at any time. There won't be any response from IRS if you try to call during the shutdown as the service centers will be closed. Send us a message if you have additional questions. We will try to answer as quickly as we can.

The new tax law changes are going to save most taxpayers tax dollars! Single taxpayer earning $50,000 and taking the standard deduction will save over $1200 in 2018 when they file their taxes in 2019. Married couples earning $100,000 taking the standard deduction will save over $2500. And if they have two children under age 17, the savings are $3,000.

We are looking forward to the new tax season! The tax package congress passed is for 2018 tax year. We'll send updates next year to get you prepared. We will be taking calls for appointments starting the first week in January. Please have a safe New Years holiday!

As a reminder to our clients that have mortgages on their homes and normally itemize deductions, your lender may have sent your annual mortgage interest paid statement with your January statement, so you might watch for that.

This is one of several changes we'll see in filing the tax return this next year.

So our clients can plan, one big change for tax year 2016 for those filing in 2017, if you have Earned Income Tax Credit, American Opportunity Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credits that you will be claiming, IRS will not allow any refunds to be issued until after February 15th, 2017. You can still file your taxes as soon as you are ready, but the refund will not be issued until 2-15-2017. If you have questions about this issue, call us at 210/658-2587.

We are gearing up for a busy tax season. Feel free to call us at 210/658-2587 to schedule an appointment Monday through Saturday (closed Sunday). We love helping people and saving money for them on their taxes!

12/31/2015

Electronic filing will be accepted by the IRS as of January 19th, 2016. We are beginning to gear up for tax season, and hope to see you in the next few months.

12/18/2015

The IRS announced on December 17th that the standard mileage rates for business miles will be reduced for 2016 to 54 cents per mile, down from the rate of 57.5 cents per mile in 2015. They also are reducing the rate for medical or moving purposes to 19 cents per mile, down from 23 cents for 2015. Charitable mileage rate of 14 cents per mile has not changed.

01/26/2015

For those who have been wondering, the "new" thing this year is the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and additional information needed for anyone filing a tax return that did not have health insurance for the entire year. You will need to provide the months that you DID have the "Minimum Essential Coverage" during the year whether you do your taxes yourself or take them to a professional. Statistically, about 65% of Americans have their insurance through employers, or other government health plans like Medicare, Tricare, etc. If you have dependents that did NOT have insurance, they must be accounted for on your tax return as well.

01/03/2015

On December 29th, the IRS announced that the extender legislation was passed and the opening of the 2014 tax season will begin on Jan. 20th, 2015. Tax returns can be electronically filed at that time.

12/04/2014

Yesterday, the US House approved what has become known to be called the "extenders" for tax purposes, which includes different education credits/ sales tax for those of us in Texas that itemize and a whole host of other provisions that ended 12/31/2013. The Senate has not yet acted on this for 2014. If they don't it will impact a large percentage of our clients.

11/06/2014

By the way, we've heard from two clients in the past 24 hours about telephone calls supposedly coming from Washington DC and the IRS. THESE ARE BOGUS! The IRS would never call your home and say if you don't give them information they will call the police and have you thrown in jail!!!!! It has to be a phishing scam! Disregard any "phone calls" from the IRS. Contact Brad Richerson or B & H Tax Service if you have any questions. It is an automated message, and when one of our clients called back, the responder's English was poor at best.

10/23/2014

Thanks to all our wonderful clients, we just completed extension period returns and want to thank our clients for our largest number of returns completed. We appreciate you and enjoyed serving you this year. We look forward to 2015!

07/20/2014

IRS tax forum complete. I hope all our friends have Minimum Health Insurance Coverage for 2014. If not, you may want to purchase something to minimize your tax you will owe for 2014.

12/22/2013

IRS announced the official date to accept electronically filed returns will be Jan 31st, 2014 for your 2013 taxes. B & H Tax can help you sooner in the month if you are ready, but the actual submission will occur on the 31st!

12/16/2013

The Affordable Care Act will cause higher income earners to pay additional taxes in 2013 tax year. Married filing joint taxpayers with income in excess of $250,000, or Single/Head of Household taxpayers with income in excess of $200,000 will be required to pay an additional medicare tax, and may be looking at a Net Investment Income Tax of 3.9% in certain circumstances.

11/07/2013

B & H Tax Service has moved next door to the office we have called home for 4 tax seasons. We are now in Suite #22 rather than Suite #21. We are gearing up for next tax season!

01/14/2013

IRS announced that they will not be able to accept any tax returns, either by mail or electronically until Jan. 30th due to the late changes made by Congress.

01/01/2013

Starting to gear up for tax season (beginning with my own). Encourage your friends to like us and they can always ask questions that they may have.

01/13/2012

If anyone needs help in preparing their taxes, might I recommend this organization?

Some clients have been asking about the new tax law change and how it affects them. Our software provided us a glimpse of the impact on our clients' taxes. Most were postively impacted. Keep in mind that while the taxes are probably reduced, the amount withheld has been lowered as well.
