ā€¼ļøThere are warnings out tonight about a scam circulating involving Amazon.

Multiple residents in our community have reported receiving these postcards offering free gifts or cash rewards.

How the Postcard Scam Works:

šŸ“The Bait: You receive a physical postcard featuring the Amazon logo claiming you were selected for a VIP club, product testing, or review program, offering a $20 to $40 reward or free items.

šŸ“The QR Code Trap: The card asks you to scan a QR code to complete a survey or claim your prize. This sends you to a fake website designed to steal your login details or download malware.

šŸ“The Review/Refund Trick: Some versions ask you to buy a third-party item and send confirmation to a private email address for a cash refund. The scammers take your money and disappear.

How to Protect Yourself

šŸ“Do not scan: Never scan QR codes or visit website URLs found on unsolicited mail. Check your account: Legitimate messages from Amazon will always appear in your official message center under Account > Your Messages.

šŸ“Report the fraud: Forward details or photos of the mail to [email protected] or file a report with the Federal Trade Commission.

A reminder: The IRS will not send you unsolicited email about your tax refund, tax bill or a recent filing. And you definitely won't receive any documents from the IRS via email that require you to download them on your computer. If an unexpected email claims to be from the IRS, don’t click links or open attachments.

When in doubt, go directly to IRS.gov to check your account.

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) for the Social Security Administration (SSA) has released an alert about a new scam affecting seniors relying on retirement benefits each month.

ā€œWarning: The SSA OIG alerts about a government imposter scam using fake Supreme Court letters! Don't share personal info or money,ā€ the Social Security OIG wrote on X on Wednesday.

Why It Matters
More than 70 million people rely on Social Security benefits each month. With millions of those at retirement age, scams are common with many fraudsters creating compelling tactics to steal one's identity or money.

Identity theft or stolen funds can occur if someone engages with the scammers, so ignoring letters, texts and calls and reporting it to authorities is essential.

What To Know
The new scam presents itself as an official-looking letter identified as a ā€œcertificateā€ on fake U.S. Supreme Court letterhead using forged signatures of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

The letter puts pressure on Americans to cooperate with the SSA official, asking them to send money and share personal information.

It might be convincing to seniors and other recipients as it is personally addressed to them and claims they are a primary suspect in connection with legal proceedings and criminal charges. The letter also alleges that according to findings from SSA and the incorrectly named ā€œDrug Enforcement Agency,ā€ the recipient may have been subjected to identity theft, adding that their Social Security number (SSN) has been compromised.

Some recipients may fall victim to the scam due to the letter’s statement that the Court requested financial institutions to freeze all the recipient’s assets and requires full cooperation with the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Recipients are also told they cannot maintain a balance exceeding $10,000 in any banking institution or hold $80,000 - $100,000 in any investments or financial institution.

"Falling for this scam, which involves letters, texts, and/or emails pretending to be from the Supreme Court, can lead to identity theft, financial loss, and serious stress. Anyone targeted should avoid clicking links or replying and be sure to verify the claim through official government websites, and report it to the Federal Trade Commission or the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General,ā€ Caroline Raker, a registered Social Security analyst and owner of Clarity Financial, told Newsweek. ā€œIf you’ve already provided information or money, act quickly to freeze accounts, monitor credit reports, and file a formal fraud report."

The Federal Government Will Phase Out Paper Checks on September 30

The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced Thursday that the federal government will stop issuing paper checks for most federal payments on September 30, 2025. No action is required for the vast majority of Americans who already receive federal benefit payments electronically. Treasury advises that if you are still receiving a paper check for Social Security, Veterans benefits, or any other Federal benefit, enroll in direct deposit using one of the following options:
Call the Federal agency that pays your benefits and follow their instructions for enrolling in direct deposit. A list of the paying agencies’ contact information can be found here.
Enroll online at GoDirect.gov
Call the Electronic Payment Solution Center at 800-967-6857, Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. ET
Treasury also noted that individuals without a bank account to receive direct deposit can safely access resources to open an account at FDIC: GetBanked or MyCreditUnion.gov.
