“Just do everyone as a 1099 if you’re under 10 employees” is advice we hear ALL THE TIME in small business circles — and it’s one of the fastest ways to end up owing the IRS way more than you saved.

Worker classification isn’t about headcount. It’s about who controls the work — the hours, the tools, the how. Get it wrong, and you’re not just looking at back taxes. You’re looking at penalties, interest, and a Texas Workforce Commission audit that can trace back years.

Swipe through for what’s actually true 👉

Not sure if someone on your team should be on payroll or on a 1099? That’s exactly the kind of question we love untangling. Send us a message — let’s get it right before it becomes expensive. 💚

One of the best parts of what I do is getting to walk alongside business owners like this one. Boerne Bespoke Cleaning Service, LLC just celebrated 13 months in business: voted Best House Cleaning in Boerne’s Best of Boerne! Watching her turn a side hustle into a thriving company, all while being an incredible mom and wife, has been such an honor to witness. Thank you for trusting me with the business side of things so you can keep doing what you do best. So proud to be part of your story, here’s to many more years of growth!

One whole year! ✨

We actually did it! One year of Boerne Bespoke Cleaning…well, 13 months to be exact. I've spent this last month trying to find the right words to pack all my gratitude into one "cheesy" post, but the truth is, my heart is just so full.

When we first moved to Boerne, I started cleaning as a simple side hustle. I remember throwing together some Canva ads and posting them in our local Facebook mom group with zero expectations. A few of you took a chance on the "new girl from Nebraska," and from those first few homes, this little dream just took off! Word of mouth travels fast in this small town, and I saw the chance to try something I never imagined: becoming a business owner.

I couldn't have done it alone. Erik was so excited to support me, even when he realized three months in that he'd basically signed up to be our delivery driver, racing cleaning supplies to the cleaning crews all over the Hill Country! Boerne Bespoke wouldn't be where it is today without the endless encouragement from him and my family every step of the way.

As we grew, I started bringing on crew members, working side-by-side with them to perfect our systems. We found such a welcoming community in the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce and Boerne Love, whose resources and connections really fueled our momentum. And I have to give a huge shoutout to Celeste Passement Baker Accounting; having her as our accountant brought so much clarity and stability to the "business" side of things, letting me focus on what I love. Every single one of our team members brings something special to the table, and I'm so grateful for the dedication they pour into Boerne Bespoke.

"Bespoke" means custom-made, and that's exactly how we treat every home. Our team works incredibly hard to care for your space as if it were their own. It's one thing to follow a checklist, but it takes a truly special person to remember the little things—like which treat the dog gets or which stuffy the toddler likes tucked into their bed. Because of this amazing team, we're able to bring a whole new level of personal, professional cleaning services to Boerne.

I have met so many incredible people here. Our schedule stays full because so many of you gave us a chance and have cheered us on since day one.

Because of your incredible support, we were even voted Best House Cleaning in the Boernean’s Best of Boerne! I am still pinching myself.

It is so exciting to see how far this "side hustle" has come in just one year. I am so looking forward to another year of growing and serving this amazing community.

Thank you for everything, Boerne! ❤️

📋 “I just formed my LLC… now what?”

If that’s you right now, you’re not alone. The decisions you make in the next few weeks matter more than most people realize. Getting your EIN, bank account, sales tax setup, and compliance obligations right the first time saves real money later.

That’s exactly why I offer the New Business Consultation, a focused 60 minute session (virtual or in person) covering:

✔️ EIN & bank account setup. Which documents you need, and why your business name has to match exactly

✔️ Comptroller obligations. Texas franchise tax, your Public Information Report, and BOI reporting, explained in plain language

✔️ Entity & tax elections. LLC vs. S corp, based on your actual projected income

✔️ Why bookkeeping starts day one. And how skipping this now leads to an expensive cleanup later

✔️ Your Certificate of Formation confirmed. Verified filing status with the TX Secretary of State

✔️ Sales tax permit & resale certificate. Do you need a permit, and could a resale certificate save you tax on materials?

✔️ Your first 90 days, mapped out. A clear, sequenced plan, not just a to do list

You’ll walk away with:
📄 A personalized PDF with your key compliance dates
📊 A curated chart of accounts, built for your specific business
✉️ A follow up summary email you can keep for your records

Available in English or Español.

💳 If you use Toast, Clover, Square, or a similar POS system: this one could be costing you real money 👇🏼

Here’s something a lot of business owners don’t realize until it’s too late: your 1099-K reports gross, not net.

That number is every dollar your customers paid, before processing fees, refunds, or chargebacks ever come out.

It is not your actual income.

A few things that quietly get missed:

• Processing fees.

Toast, Clover, and Square typically take 2-3% + per transaction before the money ever hits your bank account.

If you’re not recording that fee as a deductible business expense, you’re paying tax on money you never actually kept.

• Sales tax.

The tax you collect through your POS is bundled right into that gross 1099-K total, but it was never your income to begin with. It has to be backed out, or you’re overstating your revenue.

• Tips, refunds, and chargebacks.

Each of these changes what you actually earned versus what the form reports. Miss any of them, and your taxable income ends up inflated.

❓Why this matters beyond just “it’s annoying”:
✔️ It stops you from overpaying tax on money you never kept
✔️ It keeps your reported income properly aligned with what the IRS already sees on your 1099-K
✔️ It gives you real numbers to actually run your business by, not inflated ones

This is exactly the kind of thing a good accountant catches by reconciling your POS system’s reports against your 1099-K and your bank deposits, not just filing whatever number shows up on the form.

If nobody’s doing that reconciliation for you, there’s a good chance you’ve been overpaying.

That equipment purchase is more than a QuickBooks entry: it’s an asset that affects your taxes AND your business’s value.

Fixed assets are one of the most commonly mishandled line items in small business books.

‼️Here’s what business owners need to know:

1. Record it correctly. Equipment, vehicles, and major purchases should be capitalized as assets, not buried as expenses. If your balance sheet doesn’t reflect what your business actually owns, it’s understating your company’s real value.

2. Depreciation isn’t optional or arbitrary. The IRS assigns a recovery period to each asset class (commonly 5, 7, 15, 27.5, or 39 years) that determines how the cost gets written off over time.

3. Section 179 lets you deduct it now. Instead of spreading the deduction across years, Section 179 allows you to expense qualifying equipment and purchases immediately, up to $2,560,000 for 2026 (phase-out begins at $4,090,000 in purchases).

4. Bonus depreciation stacks on top. It’s currently 100%, meaning after Section 179 is applied, most remaining cost can often be written off in the same year too.

Why this actually matters, beyond the tax return:
✔️ Lowers this year’s tax liability, legally and immediately
✔️ Strengthens your balance sheet for loans, investors, or a future buyer
✔️ Avoids depreciation recapture surprises if you sell the asset later

A few things worth knowing too: Section 179 can’t create a business loss (it’s limited to your business income), while bonus depreciation can, so the order and strategy matter. And if business use of an asset drops below 50%, or you sell it early, recapture rules can claw back some of what you deducted. This is exactly the kind of thing worth planning before you buy, not after.

If you’re not sure your books currently reflect your equipment and vehicles correctly, let’s take a look before year-end tax planning season is in full swing.

One month out - mark it down: September 15.

Two important deadlines land on the exact same day:

& Partnerships & S-Corps — extended returns due

& Q3 Estimated Tax Payments - 2026 estimates due

If you’re self-employed, a 1099 earner, or run a pass-through entity, both of these might apply to you.

Here’s what most business owners get stuck on: how much do I actually need to set aside? Guess wrong and you risk an underpayment penalty.

Guess too conservatively and you’re needlessly starving your cash flow.

That’s exactly why I offer quarterly tax planning - I help you calculate what to set aside for your family each quarter based on your real numbers, not a guess. No more scrambling the week before a due date.

💡 Already a monthly bookkeeping client? You get special add-on pricing for estimated payment calculations — ask me about it.

Let’s build your plan before the 15th sneaks up on you
