When we talk with business-owner plan sponsors about retirement, one of the questions we ask is:

➡️ Does your retirement plan involve eventually selling or transitioning your business?

If the answer is yes, there are planning decisions worth thinking through now, even if that transition is still a few years away.

A future sale can create a significant capital gain and change the way you generate income, invest, and plan for retirement. Starting early can give you more time to evaluate potential strategies to address capital gains, determine what you’ll need from the sale, and prepare the rest of your financial plan for what comes next.

You don’t need a buyer or a firm retirement date to start preparing. If selling or transitioning your business could be part of your next 1–5 years, consider starting the planning before the transaction does.

It’s that time of year when there are things we should consider doing from a planning standpoint.

Here are a few areas worth putting on your radar now:

🔎 Charitable giving: If you’re planning to fund a donor advised fund this year or give from one, be mindful of year-end processing deadlines.

🔎 Retirement contributions: Review what you’ve contributed to employer-sponsored retirement plans and IRAs, along with the limits and deadlines that apply to you.

🔎 Tax-loss harvesting: Take a look at taxable investment accounts with your CPA to determine whether there are losses that could be used to offset realized capital gains.

December has a way of arriving quickly. Thinking of these things now leaves more time to address anything that needs attention before year-end.

September put the bond market in focus.

Treasury yields climbed to multi-year highs as investors weighed persistent inflation, higher oil prices, and the Federal Reserve's first rate hike since 2023. Meanwhile, the headline equity market remained relatively calm, even as performance beneath the surface became more uneven.

As we head into the fourth quarter, inflation, interest rates, energy prices, and geopolitical developments remain important areas to watch, balanced by continued strength in the economy and corporate earnings.

On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we pause to honor the service members who were prisoners of war and those who remain missing in action.

In San Diego, the military community is part of the fabric of our city. We see that commitment in the families, veterans, service members, and organizations that surround us.

We also recognize the families who have carried their absence and kept their memory alive.

Today, we remember their service and sacrifice.

Would your business protection plan still work today?

Most business owners have something in place: a buy-sell agreement, key-person coverage, maybe a continuity plan drawn up years ago with the best advice available at the time.

The problem usually occurs when the business keeps moving and the plan doesn’t.

Valuations shift. Ownership changes hands, sometimes gradually, sometimes all at once. The person your key-person coverage was built around may not even hold that role anymore. And the funding behind a buy-sell agreement that made sense five years ago may fall short of what the business is worth now.

It may be worth taking a second look.

Our latest article breaks down where these gaps tend to show up and what’s worth revisiting as your business changes.

Today, we remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and honor the first responders, service members, and countless others whose courage and compassion were felt in the days and years that followed.

May we continue to remember through service, gratitude, and care for one another.

Life insurance can play very different roles at different stages of your financial life.

Earlier on, the need may be straightforward: replacing income, paying off debt, or helping provide for your family if something happens to you.

As your financial life evolves, the conversation can change. Life insurance may become part of planning for estate liquidity, wealth transfer, charitable goals, or even how an estate is divided among family members.

Estate equalization is one example. For families with assets that aren't easily divided, such as a business or real estate, life insurance can sometimes help create liquidity for other heirs without requiring those assets to be sold or divided.

We take a closer look at how this strategy can work here: https://www.themanningcompanies.com/blog/2026/03/23/when-your-biggest-asset-cant-be-split-evenly

Before year-end planning begins, what should your cash actually be doing?

Tax payments. Charitable gifts. A planned purchase or major expense. Near-term distributions. Different needs can call for different amounts of liquidity and different timelines.

Identifying those needs now can help you determine how much cash should remain readily available, and whether money you won't need immediately could be positioned differently.

Our Cash Alternatives Corner offers current rates and resources to help you evaluate the options available for short-term cash.
