It’s time to address year-end tax planning, especially if your business is booming. Start by projecting your 2026 tax obligation and assessing whether estimated payments made throughout the year are sufficient. You may need to adjust your fourth payment to potentially avoid (or minimize) underpayment penalties.

Also consider tax-reduction strategies, such as timing revenue and expenses, taking advantage of the qualified business income deduction, contributing to a retirement plan and leveraging first-year depreciation write-offs for eligible asset purchases.

These moves require careful coordination, so contact us to explore your options. We can help develop a plan tailored to your situation.

If you want to sell your business, receiving the purchase price over time in an installment sale may allow you to spread your gain — and the related tax — over several years.

The buyer typically makes a down payment and issues a note for the balance. Each principal payment generally includes a tax-free return of basis and taxable gain; interest on the note is taxed separately as ordinary income. This arrangement may also expand the pool of buyers or help you obtain a higher price. But depreciation recapture may be taxable upfront, and you assume the risk that the buyer won’t pay.

Contact us to discuss the pros and cons and determine the optimal deal structure for your situation.

If your child is heading to college this fall, tax breaks may be available. For example, you might be eligible for the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) of up to $2,500 per student for the first four years of college. But the AOTC is phased out for married joint filers with modified adjusted gross income between $160,000 and $180,000 (between $80,000 and $90,000 for heads of households).

If your child has a tax-advantaged education account, such as a 529 plan, tax-free withdrawals can be taken to pay qualified expenses. But expenses paid with tax-free withdrawals can’t be used to claim the AOTC.

Contact us to discuss these and other tax tips for your situation.

Large stock market gains in recent years, coupled with volatility in 2026, may have left you with a portfolio that’s out of balance with your desired asset allocation. If you haven’t rebalanced recently, it may be time. Careful planning can minimize the tax cost.

Say your portfolio is overweighted in large-cap U.S. stocks. You can save 2026 taxes if you sell some of this appreciated stock from a retirement account because the gain won’t be taxed. If you need to sell the stock from a taxable account, see whether there are assets in the account you can sell at a loss. The recognized loss can offset some or all of your capital gains.

Contact us to discuss other tax-smart strategies.

Rising home values are leaving some homeowners with large gains when they sell. But that doesn’t necessarily mean a large tax bill. If you sell your principal residence and meet certain requirements, you can exclude up to $250,000 of gain ($500,000 for joint filers). Gain that exceeds the exclusion or doesn’t qualify for it, however, is subject to long-term capital gains tax (or short-term capital gains tax if you haven’t owned the home for more than a year). It also could be subject to the net investment income tax if your income is over a certain amount. Contact us before putting your home on the market. We can help you estimate the tax impact and discuss possible planning opportunities.

If you’ve recently lost your job, you’re likely focused on replacing income and evaluating your next steps. But some tax implications related to a job loss may also require attention. For example, unemployment compensation and severance pay are generally taxable, at least at the federal level. And health insurance premiums you’d been paying pre-tax from your paycheck may now have to be paid after-tax — though you might be able to deduct them. There are also tax consequences to consider in relation to your retirement plan with your former employer or withdrawing funds from an IRA to replace some of your lost income. If you’d like guidance, contact us.

Many parents don’t know that the “kiddie tax” exists. Others assume it affects only minor children. But it also can apply to full-time students through age 23 and 18-year-olds even if they aren’t full-time students. When it applies, the child’s unearned income in excess of $2,700 (for 2026) is taxed at the parent’s tax rate, if higher.

If your child has investment income from custodial accounts, consider reviewing the types of investments in those accounts. Growth-oriented investments that generate little current income may help reduce exposure to the kiddie tax until your child is old enough that the tax no longer applies.

If you’d like help evaluating your family’s situation, contact us.
