You do not need a Social Security Number to legally earn an independent income, work with corporate clients, or build wealth in the U.S.
For years, fear and bad advice have pushed talented, hardworking people in our community into under-the-table cash jobs or unfair arrangements.
But here is the truth: under federal tax law, independent business contracting does not require standard employment authorization (Form I-9). When you provide services as an independent contractor or small business owner, clients request a Form W-9—which legally accepts an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
As a Tax Strategist and Bookkeeping Mentor, I see this misunderstanding holding people back every single day. I want to change that.
I’m thinking about putting together some simple, 100% confidential, and judgment-free resources specifically for immigrant entrepreneurs and freelancers, showing exactly:
How to properly fill out a W-9 using your ITIN.
How to safely invoice clients and get paid legally via 1099s.
How to track your income and deductions so you are protected and compliant.
But before I spend the next few weeks building this out, I want to make sure it’s something our community actually needs right now.
If I put together a free, step-by-step guide on how to safely start taking 1099 contract work with an ITIN… would you want a copy?
